BIRGMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford College track & field team excelled at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships hosted this weekend in the Birmingham CrossPlex. The team set numerous school records during the weekend's events.

Wofford's men finished the meet in seventh with a total of 12 points, while the women tied for eighth earning five team points.

DAY 1:

The Wofford College track and field team set three school records after the first day of competition.

Freshman Katie Beuerlein crushed the standing school record in the pentathlon, earning a fifth place finish with 3,251 points while earning four team points. The previous record holder, was Mackenzie DeGraff, who scored 2,450 points in 2011.

"I'm really proud of how Katie competed today," said fourth-year head coach Johnny Bomar. "She's a tough competitor and really did a great job in the pentathlon. She broke the previous record with events left to go, and was only beaten by juniors and seniors. For a freshman to come in and compete like that, you can't ask for much more."

Beuerlein also broke the 60 meter hurdles record with a time of 9.42 seconds.

On the men's side, senior Travis Butler set a new record in the men's open 400 meter dash with a time of 51.19 seconds - .03 seconds faster than the mark set by Brian Smith set in 2009.

The Terriers followed these performances with a couple of personal record performances. Sophomore Faith Jewkes earned a new best of 61.4 seconds in the 400 meter, while freshman Samuel Robinson qualified for the finals in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.85 seconds.

Other notable performances were made by Junior Tevin Johnson. Johnson placed sixth in the high jump with a height of 6"2 and placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 21"11, giving the men 6 points.

At the end of the first day of competition, on the women's side, the Terriers scored 4 points. On the men's side, the Terriers scored 7 points.

DAY 2:

The second day of action was headed by another record setting performance, this time from Gaston Hayworth. The sophomore beat his former school record in the weight throw by nearly two meters, tossing an astounding 15.07 meters. Hayworth's performance was good enough for an eighth place finish and one team point on the men's side.

"Gaston really stepped up for the team today," said Bomar. "He did a great job and shattered the record. I'm proud of what he did."

The men's team also made a notable performance, breaking the school record in the 4x400 meter. Seniors Travis Butler and Sam Parrott with freshman Matt Ransom and junior anchor Alex Michaels ran in a time of 3:28.48, good for a sixth place finish and three team points.

For the women's side, the Terriers scored a team point in the 4x400, when sophomore Faith Jewkes, and freshmen Sara Hayes, Anya Bunao and Chandler Washburn ran in a time of 4:17.63.

The Terriers begin the outdoor season on March 20, as the team will head to Charlotte for the 49ers Classic.
