SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In one of the largest matches of the team's out-of-conference schedule, the Wofford Terriers rallied back in dramatic fashion to earn a 4-3 victory over former SoCon foe Appalachian State on Thursday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
Wofford (3-1) trailed late in singles play, down 3-2 to Appalachian State (3-3). With two positions to finish, the Terriers needed both victories to defeat the visiting Mountaineers. At the top spot, senior Rob Galloway pulled ahead, putting away Oliver Casey in two sets, 6-2, 7-5 to knot up the match.
With the team points tied at three, it came down to the No. 6 position to decide the match. After dropping the first set, freshman Parks Schoen clinched the match in tremendous fashion, handing Trey Morris a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 loss.
The Terriers found themselves on the wrong end of some tough matches at first, dropping the doubles point to the Mountaineers. First to finish was the No. 3 spot, in which sophomore Trevor Gotkowski and junior David Sklar fell, 7-5, to Morris and Jan-Willem Kleynhans. Galloway and sophomore Haris Poric knotted up the doubles point, winning a tight 7-5 match over Zach Bost and Casey. Walker Heffron and Parks Thompson tried to pull out the victory at the No. 2 position, but were overmatched by Scott Webster and Jack Maddocks, 7-6.
Poric would tie the team points, finishing first in singles action. The Australia native took down Bost at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3. Next, Gotkowski faced a setback, 6-2, 6-3 at the hands of the Mountaineers' Webster. Thompson earned a victory at the No. 5 spot, taking down Kleynhans 6-3, 6-4, before the Terriers found themselves down a point in a No. 3 loss, with Heffron falling 6-4, 6-2 to Maddocks.
The two following singles victories gave the Terriers their first comeback win of the season.
Wofford is set for an intimidating weekend slate, facing two ranked opponents on the road this weekend in No. 28 Clemson and No. 23 South Carolina. The Terriers face Clemson Saturday evening before taking on the Gamecocks in Columbia on Sunday.
