SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford's men's soccer team played UNC Asheville close in their final exhibition game but ultimately fell to the Bulldogs 1-0 Saturday night at Snyder Field.
Â
Bulldogs forward Chuka Anyafo broke a scoreless tie in the 61
st minute with a goal from 10 yards out. Anyafo received a pass from midfielder Ben Chapel in the box and put the ball into the back left corner of the net.
Â
The Bulldogs came out firing in the first half, outshooting the Terriers 5-1 for the period. However, nothing came of the shot attempts, as both teams entered halftime in a scoreless draw.
Â
Wofford outshot UNC Asheville in the second half 11-5, but the Terriers were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Bulldog goalkeeper Zak Davis ended the contest with five saves and the victory, while Wofford split time in net between juniors
Joe Wichmann and
Garrett Closs.
Â
The Terriers were without a few of their notable upperclassmen players for the game, said head coach
Ralph Polson, and therefore asked more of his younger players in the exhibition.
Â
"I thought we did alright playing without a few players," Coach Polson said after the game. "I thought in the first half we were a little tentative. We asked some other players to step up and I think it took a little time for them to adjust. But we had our chances. Again, it was a good test for our younger guys. All in all, I'm just disappointed that we don't have something to show for it. But as an exhibition, our record is still clean. We got one week to prepare for the regular season."
Â
Wofford's next contest is the regular season opener August 28 at home against Gardner-Webb. The match will start at 7 p.m., and admission to Snyder Field is free.
