BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Wofford College men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Samford Open on Friday and Saturday at the Birmingham Crossplex. A total of 82 teams competed, 41 each on the men's and women's side, in the highly competitive event. The women set three new school records and tied one mark, while the men broke two school records at the meet.
On Friday night, freshmen
McLeod Dean,
LeAndrea Combo and
Olivia Head ran the 200 meters for the women and
Jack McDonald ran the event for the men. In the 5,000 meters, Alexandria Forster and
Shannon McAndrew competed for the women, while
Cristian Widenhouse,
Jonathan Rice and
Ben Boatwright ran for the men.
Gaston Hayworth finished fifth overall in the weight throw, breaking his school record with a toss of 15.70 meters (51-06.25).
During Saturday's competition for the women,
Amber Lust broke her school record in the 60 meters with a time of 7.94.
McLeod Dean and
Olivia Head also ran the 60 meters. Lust tied her school record in the 60 meter hurdles at 9.06, while
Sara Wilson and
Sara Jane Hayes also ran the hurdles. In the 400 meters,
McLeod Dean broke the school record with a time of 1:00.54, while
LeAndrea Combo and
Faith Jewkes also competed in the event.
Jamie Barnett,
Rebeka Parent and
Chandler Washburn ran the 800 meters, with
Anya Bunao and Barnett running the mile.
Rebeka Fadgyas competed in the 3,000 meters.
Alexandra Burgess was fifth overall in the long jump at 5.61 meters, just short of her school record mark.
Sara Jane Hayes and
Kaselyn Widmyer also competed in the long jump, while Burgess went 10.99 meters in the triple jump.
Alex King set a new school mark in the weight throw with a distance of 12.32 meters (40-05.00).
For the men on Saturday,
Jack McDonald ran the 200 meters, with
Conrad Heinrich and
Sam Robinson running the 400 meters. In the mile,
Joe Harbacevich was fourth overall with a time of 4:17.22, with
Alex Michaels close behind in sixth place at 4:18.66. Both times broke the previous school record of 4:18.78 set earlier this season by Harbacevich.
Ben Hensley also ran in the mile, while
Dane Szalwinski ran the 3,000 meters. In the 60 meter hurdles,
Sam Robinson,
Conrad Heinrich and
Jack McDonald competed.
Tevin Johnson was fifth overall in the long jump, going 6.96 meters.
Omar Mingo and
Jack McDonald also participated in the long jump, with Mingo also in the triple jump.
Gaston Hayworth, Longinus Nnodim and
Conrad Heinrich threw the shot to close out the day.
The Wofford men's and women's track and field teams will be back in Birmingham on February 26-27 for the Southern Conference Championship.
