Men’s Tennis Opens Fall Season

Belton, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team opened the fall season this past weekend at the South Carolina Men's Collegiate Tennis Championships in Belton, S.C. Over 80 players representing 14 different state colleges and universities participated in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association sanctioned tournament. The Terriers had 10 players make an appearance over the weekend, Kyle Barr, Javi Casasolas, Julian Chousa, Peter Coombs, John Crawford, Diego Losada, Parks Schoen, Jack Thomas, Edu Villar and Omar Williams.
 
"Our team made me proud in many significant ways this weekend. We were professional in our preparation and our play was disciplined, focused, and purpose driven. This was our first tournament and our guys demonstrated a commitment to their development," said Wofford Head Coach Rod Ray. "The tournament was capped off by John Crawford winning the tournament's Jim Russell Sportsmanship award. John and his teammates are devoted to competing with integrity and it's nice when a truly good guy gains recognition."
 
The Terriers had one overall winner in the singles round robin bracket as well as two runner up finishes in the Cabri Singles and Scarpa Singles Flights. Diego Losada went 4-0 winning the McKinney Singles Round Robin Flight. Losada beat opponents from Anderson University, Newberry College and Presbyterian College while only dropping 11 games over the weekend.
 
John Crawford and Peter Coombs both finished as runner ups in their respective flights over the weekend. Crawford won matches against opponents from Newberry College, The Citadel and North Greenville University and fell in the championship match of the Scarpa Singles Flight. Crawford won three matches over the weekend while dropping 28 sets in the process. Peter Coombs won matches against opponents from Winthrop, The Citadel and Anderson and fell in the championship match of the Cabri Singles Flight. Along the way Coombs dropped just 16 games in his three wins on the weekend.
 
Wofford had two teams in the Champions Doubles Flight with the pairings of Jack Thomas and Omar Williams and Javi Casasolas and Julian Chousa. Casasolas and Chousa won three matches on the weekend and finished in third place defeating teams from Lander University, South Carolina State and Furman. Omar Williams and Javi Casasolas lost their first match but then won three straight matches over opponents from Clemson, Lander and North Greenville to win the Consolation bracket of the Championship Doubles Flight.
 
The Terriers had two teams in the Demars Doubles Flight with the pairings of Kyle Barr and John Crawford and Peter Coombs and Parks Schoen. Coombs and Schoen went 3-1 in their matches defeating opponents from Newberry and Winthrop. Coombs and Schoen lost in the semifinal match but won the third place match over Winthrop. Barr and Crawford went 3-1 on the weekend winning a match against USC Sumpter, The Citadel and Winthrop.
 
Wofford also had the pairing of Edu Villar and Diegoa Losasda in the Varn Doubles Flight. The combination won two matches over opponents Anderson and North Greenville on the weekend and lost in the championship match.

The Terriers will continue the Fall Schedule on October 13th when Wofford will participate in the ITA Regional in Cary, N.C.
