SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team fell, 6-1, to USC Upstate on Friday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Â
The loss drops the Terriers to 4-3 on the season and 0-3 in true road matches.
Â
The Spartans received momentum early on, as they took the doubles point when Fernando Bernardes and Ignacio Garrido closed out the Wofford team of
Trevor Gotkowski and
Andrew Graham, 6-4.
Haris Poric and
Julian Chousa's match was tied, 5-5, when USC Upstate clinched the point, so that match went unfinished.
Â
After the Spartans took the first singles match to take a 2-0 lead,
Lucas Cerbelli continued his strong play for the Terriers, closing out USC Upstate's Ankush Arora, 6-4, 6-4, in the no. 2 position. Cerbelli's win cut the Spartans lead to 2-1, but that was as close as the Terriers got to the lead, as the Spartans won the four remaining matches in straight sets to earn the win.
Â
In the no. 3 spot, Wofford's
Parks Schoen battled to force a second set tiebreak but Bernardes took the tiebreak to win the match, 6-1, 7-6 (4-0).
Â
The Terriers will be back in action tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. as they host Emmanuel College (Ga.) at Reeves Tennis Center.
