Men's Tennis Takes Down Samford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team took down Samford, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Tennis Center.

The win improves the Terriers to 11-7 on the season, surpassing last season's total of 10 wins. It also serves as the team's first conference win of 2017.

"Our team was tough this afternoon," coach Rod Ray said. "We continue to improve and that was evident today. I couldn't be prouder of the effort and work that we've put in and it was fun to see it shine through on a cloudy afternoon. I can't wait until our next match."

In doubles action, the Terriers were sharp, winning all three of the matches to take the opening point. In the no. 3 doubles match, Wofford's team of Jack Thomas and Lucas Cerbelli easily dispatched their opponents, 6-1. Then, needing to win just one of the remaining two matches, the Terriers took both, with seniors Patrick Longest and Andrew Graham winning, 6-3, before fellow seniors Trevor Gotkowski and Haris Poric won, 7-5.

In Graham and Longest's match at no. 2, the duo fell behind, 0-3, but rallied to win six straight games to take the match and clinch the point for Wofford.

Poric got the Terriers off to a great start, earning a 6-2, 6-2 win in the no. 1 position to begin singles play.

As the Bulldogs began to take a few second sets to get back into some matches, it was the no. 5 and no. 6 courts that gave the Terriers the win.

At no. 6, Kyle Barr took care of Hugo Moreira, 6-3, 6-2. Minutes later, Julian Chousa won his match, 6-0, 7-5, to give Wofford a 4-0 lead and their first conference win of the season.

Max Rebol put Samford on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 win at no. 4, followed by two Samford wins in three set matches at the no. 2 and no. 3 positions.

Prior to the game, Terrier seniors Trevor Gotkowski, Andrew Graham, Patrick Longest, and Haris Poric were honored for their contributions to the Wofford men's tennis program.

Up next, the Terriers will host Furman next Tuesday, March 28 at 2:30 p.m.
