GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team fell, 4-0, to UNCG in the first round of the SoCon Tournament on Friday morning in Greenville.
The Terriers finished with a 13-10 record for the season.
UNCG raced out to a 1-0 lead by taking two of three doubles matches. First, Marcus Vidgren and Jack Burkill took their match, 6-1, at no. 2. The next two matches were tightly contested, and the Terriers evened things up with a 6-4 win from
Jack Thomas and
Lucas Cerbelli at no. 3. Unfortunately, the Spartans prevailed with a 7-5 win from Connor Thompson and William Albright at no. 1.
UNCG carried its momentum into singles play, as they took the first set in all six singles matches. The Terriers fought back in the second, but the Spartans were still able to take the first two matches.
First, Albright won 6-1, 7-5, over
Parks Schoen at no. 3. Then, Chousa and Daniel Hammarstedt battled in a three set duel, but Hammarstedt prevailed, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.
Cerbelli fought back in his match at no. 2, but the Spartans clinched the win when Vidgren defeated him 6-1, 6-7, 6-1.
The remaining three matches went unfinished. In all three matches, Wofford had battled back after dropping the first set to force a third.
The team's 13 wins in 2017 were the most for them since the 2009 season, when they also won 13 matches.
