Wofford Sixth At SoCon Outdoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Friday, the Wofford College men's and women's track and field teams concluded the 2017 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium. The men's squad finished sixth with 52 points and the women finished sixth with 44 points.  
 
The 52 points scored by the men were the most in school history, while the sixth place finish was tied for the best in school history. For the women, the 44 points also were the most in school history, with the sixth place finish tied for the highest ever for the Terriers.
 
"I am very proud of our team," said head coach Johnny Bomar. "We keep performing better and better every year. This gives us a lot of positive momentum heading into next season."
 
Overall, seven school records were set during the championship. Four individuals earned All-Southern Conference honors: Amber Lust in the heptathlon, McLeod Dean in the 200 meters, Joe Harbacevich in the 800 meters and Conrad Heinrich in the decathlon. The men's 4x100 relay and women's 4x400 relay also earned All-Southern Conference honors. Terriers also earned a total of eight All-Freshman Team honors. 
 
The day began with the conclusion of the decathlon. Conrad Heinrich took first place in the 110 hurdles, shot put, 1500 meters and the javelin on the way to a second place finish with 5,922 points. He was named All-Southern Conference for the second straight season. Sam Robinson was fifth overall with 5,429 points. After the final three events of the heptathlon on Friday, Amber Lust was second overall with a school record 4,772 points and earned All-Southern Conference honors. Sara Jane Hayes had 4,021 points for fifth place.
 
In finals for the women, Friday began with a fourth place finish in the 4x100 relay in a school record time of 47.49. The team was comprised of Amber Lust, McLeod Dean, Kassidy Morton and Cairo Booker. Mary Stewart Wilson was seventh in the 1,500 meters in 4:44.36 and Amber Lust was seventh in the 100 meter hurdles in 14.62. Kassidy Morton was fourth in the 400 meters with a school record of 56.85.
 
McLeod Dean was fifth in the 100 meters at 11.96, having set a school record in the preliminaries. Dean was second in the 200 meters with a time of 23.88 to set a new school record and earn All-Southern Conference honors. Amber Lust added a seventh place in the 100 meter hurdles at 14.62, just short of her school record time of 14.42 set in the Thursday preliminaries. The 4x400 relay team of LeAndrea Combo, McLeod Dean, Kassidy Morton and Cairo Booker was third overall in 3:49.80 to set a new school record in the event and earn All-SoCon honors.

For the men, the Terriers were third in the 4x100 relay to begin Friday's events. Bosco Bapoupeleh then finished seventh in the 100 meters at 10.89 and seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 22.13. In the 800 meters, Joe Harbacevich was second overall in 1:53.23 to earn All-Southern Conference honors for the second straight season. Jack Zemp added an eight place finish in the 1500 meters and Jonathan Hall went 57.96 in the 400 meter hurdles for seventh place. The men's 4x100 relay was third overall to earn All-SoCon honors and the 4x400 relay took fifth place in the final event of the day.
 
Western Carolina won the final event of the day, the 4x400-meter relay, to edge Samford for the men's title. The Catamount men posted 190.5 points to slip past the Bulldogs, who accumulated 184.5. Samford's women racked up 245 points, while runner-up WCU had 194.
