SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Thirty regular season matches, nine home dates and four non-conference tournaments highlight the 2017 volleyball schedule, announced by head coach
Lynze Roos on Wednesday.
"We're excited for the 2017 schedule," said Roos. "I believe we have the opportunity to have some early success and challenge ourselves prior to heading into the SoCon portion of play."
In 2016, Wofford posted an overall record of 17-15 and a Southern Conference record of 9-7, the first winning conference record in program history and the most conference wins ever.
Â
Wofford's season kicks off on August 25 against George Washington as part of the DISH Tennessee Classic, hosted by the University of Tennessee. The meeting will be the first between Wofford and The Colonials. The Terriers match up against both Tennessee and Western Michigan on Saturday, August 26th to conclude play in the tournament. The Terriers' meeting with Western Michigan will also be a first.
Â
"Our opening tournament will let us know where we are at physically right away," noted Roos. "The teams we will face there will be used to playing strong conference opponents, so we need to be sharp right off the bat."
Â
Wofford travels to Rock Hill for a non-conference matchup with Winthrop on August 29
th before heading to Boiling Springs, N.C. to compete in the AmericInn Runnin' Bulldogs Invitational, hosted by Gardner-Webb. There, Wofford will open with a double header against USC Upstate and NC Central on Sept. 1 and finish against Gardner-Webb on Sept. 2.
Â
"Our match against Winthrop will also allow us to see where we stack up against a team very similar to those we will see in the SoCon," Roos said. "They will be fast and determined – and with so many of our players from the NC/SC border areas, I'm sure there will be some bragging rights on the line. Our second tournament at Gardner-Webb will provide some great local rivalries. We're excited to have so many strong matches again so early in the season."
Â
Two more tournaments follow for the Terriers. Wofford takes part in a tournament hosted by Davidson on Sept. 8-9. The Terriers open with Florida Gulf Coast, made it to the ASUN championship in 2016, on Sept. 8 and conclude with a double-header on Sept. 9 against Georgia and Davidson.
Â
"The Davidson Tournament will be a reality check for us and remind us how hard we will have to work for wins," Roos added. "All the teams there are outstanding, and it will take us playing some very good volleyball to come away with a victory."
Â
Wofford's tournament schedule concludes with a three match showdown in the Atlanta, hosted by Georgia State Sept. 16-17. After wrapping up the previous tournament with Davidson, the Terriers open up with Davidson. Wofford will play Georgia State later in the day and match up with South Carolina State the next morning.
Â
"I'm looking forward to the Georgia State tournament as the finale to our preseason portion of the schedule," said Roos. "The three teams there will all pose different challenges for us, and we will have to adjust to each team's style of play."
Wofford's conference tilt gets underway Sept. 20 when the Terriers open Richardson Indoor Stadium against SoCon foe Furman.
Â
"Opening our new arena and the SoCon season against Furman will be another tremendous test for our squad," Roos said. "It will be exciting environment, and it's wonderful to have a great rival to start the new era of Wofford Volleyball."Â
Â
The Terriers hit the road for the next two conference matches, playing at Mercer Sept. 22 and at Samford, the defending Southern Conference champion, the next day.
Â
"The road trip to Mercer and Samford is the toughest of the season," said Roos. "Both teams are strong and return some of the conference's best players – and it's geographically the longest trip, so it will be a test of rest and conditioning for our players."
Â
Roos' squad hosts eight of the next nine matches, including six straight, in Richardson Indoor Stadium, playing almost exclusively at home for nearly a month. The home stand starts Sept. 27 against The Citadel. Wofford swept The Citadel in both matches of 2016.
Â
Six days later, the Terriers welcome Presbyterian College for a non-conference meeting on Oct. 3. The 2016 squad swept both meetings with the Blue Hose. Wofford gets back on the conference bandwagon, hosting UNCG on October 6 and Western Carolina on October 7. A week later, ETSU and Chattanooga make a swing through Spartanburg, with the Terriers squaring off with the Bucs on October 13 and the Mocs on October 14.
Â
"Our home stand that runs from Sept 20 until October 14 will be an exciting time for our new arena," noted Roos. "We will really start to feel at "home" in our gym and that many matches in a row will allow us to truly make it ours."Â
Â
On Oct. 18, the second half of conference play starts as Terriers head down I-85 for a matchup with Furman. Wofford handed Furman its first home lost in two years in last year's meeting in Greenville, sweeping the Paladins 3-0.
Â
The Terriers return home to close out the conference season with Samford (Oct. 20) and Mercer (Oct. 21), senior day for
Bella Santoro,
Sutton Alexander,
Danni Densford, and
Alex Holland. In addition to being the final home game of the season for the team, October 21
st is also homecoming at Wofford College.
Â
Wofford's conference tilt ends with five consecutive road matches. The Terriers play The Citadel in Charleston on Oct. 25 and head to North Carolina a week later to face Western Carolina on Nov. 3 and UNCG on Nov. 4. Wofford's regular season concludes with a road swing to Tennessee to face Chattanooga on November 10 and ETSU on November 11.
Â
"The second half of conference play will mostly be on the road and provide strong preparation for the conference tournament," added Roos. "We will have to be hitting our stride come November when the SoCon tournament returns to Cullowhee. Having played the last five matches prior on the road will allow us to prepare mentally for that critical time."
Â
The 2017 Southern Conference tournament is scheduled for Nov. 17-19 in Cullowhee, N.C.
Â
Tickets to all home Wofford volleyball matches are available at the door. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 3-12. Children under three years of age are admitted for free.
