Men's Tennis Splits Two Matches in Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team split a pair of matches against Bucknell and #3 North Carolina on Saturday afternoon. Wofford blanked Bucknell 6-0 in the first match of the day and fell to the #3 Tar Heels in the late match moving the Terriers to 1-1 on the young season.

"We played two quality teams today," Head Coach Rod Ray said. "Being 1-1 at the end of the day is a good result to start the season. The guys played hard and showed a lot of toughness at key points of the matches. These results will allow us to grow and improve over the next few months."

The Terriers started the 2018 spring season off on the right foot with a 6-0 victory over Bucknell. The combinations of Julian Chousa/John Crawford, Omar Williams/Javi Casasolas and Kyle Barr/Lucas Cerbelli all picked up wins in the first doubles matches of the season. Chousa/Crawford and Barr/Cerbelli won while dropping no games to the opponents from Bucknell.

Wofford followed up the strong performance with a dominating effort in the singles matches. Wofford's lineup for the first match was as followed: #1 Lucas Cerbelli, #2 Julian Chousa, #3 Edu Villar, #4 Parks Schoen, #5 Kyle Barr and #6 Omar Williams.

In the second match of the day, the #3 Tar Heels defeated the Terriers 4-0. Wofford had a strong showing in the doubles matches but could not muster a victory over North Carolina. Despite falling to UNC Wofford had positive results from Lucas Cerbelli and Julian Chousa. Cerbelli lost the first set in a tie breaker to the #2 player in the country William Blumberg, prior to the match being clinched. Chousa then lead 5-3 over the #2 player for the Tar Heels but eventually fell 7-5 in the first set and led 1-0 prior to the match being clinched.

Wofford will return to the court on Saturday, January 27 when the Terriers travel to Greensboro to face off against N.C. A&T at 1 PM. The Terriers will then host King University on Sunday, January 28 at 2 PM in the home season opener.
