Men's Tennis Downs USC Upstate

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team defeated USC Upstate 6-1 in the Sparkle City showdown on Thursday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers took an early 1-0 lead in doubles and followed up with a solid performance in the singles to secure the win. With the win, Wofford moves to 5-1 on the season.

"All of today's matches were extremely close and especially in the doubles matches," said head coach Rod Ray. "I am so proud of the way our guys fought today in front of a great crowd. When two freshman clinch the doubles point it energizes the whole team and it's great that Parks was able to secure the match clinching point. We are a young team that grew a lot today and I couldn't be happier with the effort against a solid Upstate team."

The Terriers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match. Wofford's lineup for doubles was as followed: #1 Julian Chousa/John Crawford, #2 Lucas Cerbelli/Jack Thomas & #3 Omar Williams/Javi Casasolas. Cerbelli/Thomas got things started for Wofford with a 6-4 victory but the Spartans responded with a win from the #1 position. After a long battle, Wiliams/Casasolas defeated their opponent in a tie breaker to clinch the team point for Wofford.

After grabbing the team point, Wofford proceeded to take control of the match, winning the first three singles matches to clinch the victory. The Terriers lineup for singles was as followed: #1 Cerbelli, #2 Chousa, #3 Villar, #4 Schoen, #5 Barr and #6 Williams. Cerbelli made quick work of his opponent with a 6-2, 6-2 win as Williams followed suit with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Junior, Parks Schoen then clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 decision from the #4 position. Despite already having the win in hand, Villar and Barr finished the day strong with two wins to give Wofford the 6-1 victory.

Wofford will return to the court on Sunday when the Terriers host Belmont at 12 PM. The team will remain at home for two more matches, hosting North Greenville (Feb. 20) and Kennesaw State (Feb. 24) before heading back to the road.
