LEXINGTON, Va. – The 2018 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded on Sunday at VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility, with Wofford College having unprecedented success. The women's team finished fifth overall with 67 points – the highest finish and point total in school history. The men's squad was sixth overall with a school record 62 points and a tie for the best finish.
Joe Harbacevich took first place in the men's 800 meters, becoming the first Terrier to win an individual Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field championship. His time of 1:53.94 was just off his school record mark.
"Both teams competed well and really excelled this weekend," said head coach
Johnny Bomar. "They battled all weekend and represented Wofford well. Joe (Harbacevich) has been close in the 800 meters the past couple of years and I am proud that he was able to get a win.
Hannah Steelman (three top four finishes) came in as a freshman and wasn't afraid of the challenge as she ran some of the toughest races during the weekend."
Overall, eleven school records were set during the championship. Eight individual All-Southern Conference honors were the most in school history:
Amber Lust (pentathlon and 60 meter hurdles),
William Stout (heptathlon),
Conrad Heinrich (heptathlon),
Austin Lufkin (shot put),
Omar Mingo (triple jump),
Hannah Steelman (5000m and 3000m). The women's 4x400 relay also earned All-Southern Conference honors. Terriers also earned a total of eight All-Freshman Team honors during the weekend.
The day began with the conclusion of the heptathlon.
Conrad Heinrich finished second overall with a school record 4650 points,
William Stout was third at 4552 points and
Sam Robinson was ninth. Heinrich was first in the 60 meter hurdles and 1000 meters, while
William Stout was second in the pole vault.
Longinus Nnodim took fifth place in the weight throw at 16.90 meters for a new school record. In the finals of the mile,
Ben Hensley was 11
th overall in 4:28.39.
Hannah Steelman took fourth place in the women's mile with a time of 4:57.83 and
Jamie Barnett was 11
th at 5:13.94.
Isaiah Ellis ran the 60 meter hurdles in 8.33 for fourth place.
Amber Lust took third in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.63 to set a new school record. In the men's 60 meters,
Omar Mingo was seventh and
Bosco Bapoupeleh was eighth.
McLeod Dean lowered her school record in the 60 meters to 7.69 with a seventh place finish.
Omar Mingo added a third place finish in the triple jump, going 14.35 meters.
Kassidy Morton ran the women's 400 meters in 56.98 to place fourth and set a new school record. In addition to
Joe Harbacevich taking first in the 800 meters,
Jack Zemp was fifth at 1:56.06.
Madison Paraskeva took fifth place in the 800 meters in 2:15.01 to break the school record.
Cisco Ferre was 19
th in the 5,000 meters. For the women in the 5,000 meters,
Hannah Steelman added a third place finish with a school record time of 16:44.88,
Taryn Schoen was 11
th and
Anya Bunao was 19
th.
The women's 4x400 relay team was third overall with a school record time of 3:50.93 by
McLeod Dean,
LeAndrea Combo,
Olivia Head and
Kassidy Morton. The men's 4x400 relay team of
Cody Chavis,
Jack Zemp,
Isaiah Ellis and
Joe Harbacevich was fourth overall.
Western Carolina took the men's title with 141 points, while Samford was first on the women's side with 161 points. The Terriers will begin the outdoor track and field season on March 14
th at Charlotte.
