CULLOWHEE, N.C. – On Friday, the Wofford College men's and women's track and field teams concluded the 2018 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at the Western Carolina Catamount Athletic Complex. Individual championships were won by
Hannah Steelman in the 3,000-meter steeplechase,
McLeod Dean in the 100 meters and 200 meters, and
Conrad Heinrich in the decathlon. The women's team finished fifth (74 points) and men's squad took fifth place (73).
For the women, the 74 points were the most in school history, while the fifth-place finish was the highest ever for the Terriers. The 73 points scored by the men were the most in school history, while the fifth-place finish was also the best in school history. The four individual titles are also the best in school history, as Wofford had only four total titles since joining the SoCon in 1997.
"I am very proud of our team," said head coach
Johnny Bomar. "A lot of hard work was put into preparations for the championship and that hard work paid off this year."
Overall, twelve school records were set during the championship. Six individuals earned a total of eight All-Southern Conference honors:
Hannah Steelman (3,000-meter steeplechase and 1,500 meters),
Amber Lust (heptathlon),
McLeod Dean (100 meters and 200 meters),
Conrad Heinrich (decathlon),
William Stout (decathlon),
Isaiah Ellis (400-meter hurdles). The women's 4x400 team was also All-Southern Conference. Terriers also earned a total of ten All-Freshman Team honors.
The day began with the conclusion of the heptathlon.
Amber Lust was second overall with 4,966 points to set a new school record.
Megan Dunn took fourth place with 4,593 points. The decathlon was dominated by the Terriers as
Conrad Heinrich won the event with a school record 6,401 points.
William Stout was second with 5,997 points,
Sam Robinson was fifth with 5,821 points and
T.J. Maxey was eighth with 5,001 points. The title for Heinrich was the first for the Wofford men's team since Katon Bethay won the shot put in 2006.
In finals for the women, the 4x100 relay team of
Amber Lust,
McLeod Dean,
Olivia Head and
Alexandra Burgess were fourth in a school-record time of 46.83. In the 100 meters,
McLeod Dean won the championship in a time of 11.61 to set a school record. Dean added a first place in the 200 meters in 23.69 to become the first Wofford athlete to win two SoCon titles.
Hannah Steelman was third in the 1,500 meters in 4:23.69 to set a new school record.
Amber Lust was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.06.
Kassidy Morton took fifth place in the 400 meters with a time of 57.31.
Madison Paraskeva took eighth place in the 800 meters in 2:16.16. The 4x400 relay team of
McLeod Dean,
LeAndrea Combo,
Madison Paraskeva and
Kassidy Morton was third overall in a school record time of 3:49.14.
For the men, the Terriers were fourth in the 4x100 relay as the team of
Omar Mingo,
Isaiah Ellis,
Cody Chavis and
Bosco Bapoupeleh broke a school record from 1998 in a time of 42.15. In the 1,500 meters,
Ben Hensley was fourth overall in a school record time of 3:56.76 and
Jack Zemp was seventh to also score points.
Isaiah Ellis was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.79 and added a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in a school record time of 53.01.
Bosco Bapoupeleh was fifth in the 100 meters at 10.84 and
Ben Hensley was eighth in the 800 meters at 1:59.17.
Austin Lufkin added a fourth place in the discus at 48.74 meters and
Omar Mingo was fifth in the triple jump at 14.44 meters. The 4x400 relay team of
Isaiah Ellis,
Bradford Smith,
Cody Chavis and
Joe Harbacevich was fourth overall.
The Western Carolina men posted 214 points win the team championship. The Catamount women had 193 points to claim the team title.
