Box Score JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Wofford women's soccer team suffered a 7-1 loss against ETSU at Summers-Taylor Stadium on Sunday. Five goals in the second half would seal the deal for the Bucs as Wofford couldn't weather the storm to make a comeback. The Terriers drop to 0-2-0 in SoCon play and 2-7-1 overall on the season.Â
Wofford came out the gates finding shots from Dani Segovia and Savannah Vathy before the Bucs would come out successful on two of their first three shots in the opening 16 minutes of play. ETSU scored their first goal in the 10th minute while additionally capitalizing, just six minutes later, on a Wofford miscue inside the box to add another goal and give them the early 2-0 lead. Both teams would go on to trade attacks, with the Bucs narrowly outshooting Wofford in the first half 11-9. Wofford managed to find several scoring opportunities from Hayley Younginer, Katie Gilligan, Marta Izquierdo, and Catie Slater going forward, however, ETSU's keeper Lea Ann Cutshall came prepared making eight saves to hold the lead going into the half.Â
Three minutes into the second half, The Terriers nearly found themselves on the scoreboard on a shot from Rachel Shinnick that hardly missed goal, hitting off the crossbar. ETSU's Sarah Connolly would then go on to pace the Bucs in pushing the lead, scoring three consecutive goals to make the lead 5-0 with just over 25 minutes remaining. Shortly after, Mayson Liner would sub in for Maria Mon to finish the match in goal. The Terriers found efforts from Hayley Younginer, Karen Majewski, and Marta Izquierdo to try and shrink the lead before Younginer would break the Terriers silence, finding the back of the net from 18-yards out in the 79th minute. Going forward, the Terriers allowed ETSU to score their final goal in the 87th minute to indisputably take the win, 7-1, at the end of regulation.Â
The Bucs outshot Wofford for the match, 21 to 19, while the Terriers took the corner kick advantage with four to ETSU's two.Â
Hayley Younginer notched her second goal of the season while also pacing the Terriers with six shots in the match. Katie Gilligan followed behind with three shots of her own while Marta Izquierdo, Rachel Shinnick, and Catie Slater all took two shots each. Dani Segovia, Savannah Vathy, Anna Opgaard, and Karen Majewski all took one shot apiece to round out the shots for the Terriers on the day.Â
Despite the loss, Maria Mon recorded six saves while Mayson Liner added two saves of her own to finish the match.Â
The Terriers return back home to Spartanburg to host Chattanooga on Friday, September 28 for a 7 p.m. contest at Snyder Field.Â
