Wofford Opens Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships

LEXINGTON, Va. – On the opening day of the 2019 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held at VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility, Wofford College had strong overall performances. The men's squad is currently seventh (4 points) and the women are fifth (22 points) after the first day of events.  
 
McLeod Dean set a new school record in the in the 60 meters at 7.57. Sixteen Terriers also advanced to the Sunday finals. Two Terriers earned All-Freshman Team honors on Saturday.
 
In the women's pentathlon, Megan Dunn finished second with 3,428 points and earned All-Southern Conference honors. Shakaiya Bradford had 3,110 points and took fifth place.
 
For the men in the opening four events of the heptathlon, Conrad Heinrich is in third place with 2,593 points, William Stout is fifth and T.J. Maxey is tenth. Top finishes for the Terriers were Heinrich with a first in the shot put and second in the high jump, along with William Stout second in the shot put.
 
Hannah Steelman was second overall in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:11.16 to earn All-Southern Conference honors. Steelman and the winner of the event, Furman's Savannah Carnahan in 9:11.04, shattered the previous Southern Conference record of 9:27.51. The women's distance medley relay team was seventh overall, while the men were eighth in the event. Longinus Nnodim threw the shot 14.93 meters to take sixth place overall.
 
Among those qualifying for finals on Sunday were Hannah Steelman (mile), Madison Paraskeva (mile and 800 meters), Amber Lust (60-meter hurdles and 200 meters), Destiny Shippy (60-meter hurdles), Isaiah Ellis (60-meter hurdles), McLeod Dean (60 meters and 200 meters), Amber Lust (60 meters), Jaylen Muhammad (60 meters and 200 meters), Bosco Bapoupeleh (60 meters), Kassidy Morton (400 meters), Elijah Bull (400 meters), and Joe Harbacevich (800 meters).
 
Samford is currently in first place in the women's championship, while Western Carolina is first in the men's championship. The championship will conclude on Sunday, with a full day of events beginning with the last three events of the men's heptathlon and ending with the 4x400 relays.
