Baseball Hosts Samford

The Terriers return home this weekend for a Southern Conference series against first-place Samford ... The series matches up two of the best offenses (Wofford second, Samford third) and pitching staffs (Samford second, Wofford third) in the league ... Wofford has begun the season 25-17 after a 12-1 win at UNC Asheville on Tuesday night ... The Terriers are 7-4 in the Southern Conference after series wins over Mercer,  Western Carolina and VMI, along with a split with ETSU ... Samford is 30-11 overall after a 4-2 win over Alabama A&M on Tuesday night and a 4-3 win against Troy on Wednesday ... They are 11-1 in the SoCon with a series sweep over Furman, The Citadel, and UNCG, and series win over VMI ... In a series that began in 2009, the Bulldogs hold a 23-13 lead over the Terriers ... In 2018, Samford earned the series win over the Terriers in Birmingham and won a SoCon Tournament meeting to go 3-1 on the season ... Wofford starters will be LHP Austin Higginbotham (8-2, 3.29 ERA), LHP Hayes Heinecke (8-0, 2.32 ERA), and to be determined on Sunday ... Samford starters will be LHP Samuel Strickland (6-1, 4.09 ERA), RHP Jesse McCord (3-1, 3.28 ERA) and RHP Zach Hester (5-3, 2.30 ERA).

• In the national rankings, Wofford is first in stolen bases (122) and first in stolen bases per game (2.90).
• Wofford has stolen 100 or more bases in seven straight seasons, dating back to 2013, the longest active streak in Division I.
• OF Colin Davis was named to the Preseason All-Southern Conference first team. Pitchers Austin Higginbotham and Anthony Garcia, along with DH Lawson Hill, were named Preseason All-Southern Conference second team.

In the 2019 season, the team returns four starters in the field along with 13 pitchers ... Overall 22 players returned to the team with 13 newcomers ... This marks the 12th season under the direction of head coach Todd Interdonato ... Leading the team are six seniors: Anthony Garcia, Austin Higginbotham, Davis Keller, Reed Massey, Ty Reginelli and Thomas Tatham ... Among the pitchers, Austin Higginbotham is 8-2 overall with a 3.29 ERA ... Hayes Heinecke is 8-0 with a 2.32 ERA, while Reece Maniscalco is the team leader in saves with four ... Lawson Hill leads the team and is third in the SoCon with a .373 batting average ... Mike Brown is seventh in the SoCon on base percentage at .457 and leads the conference with 31 steals ... Brett Rodriguez is sixth in the SoCon in batting average at .348 and has 24 stolen bases ... John Dempsey is hitting .317 and leads the team with six home runs.
