SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's teams had a record-setting meet at the 2019 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. The women were second overall with 126 points – their best finish ever. The men also recorded their best-ever finish at fourth place with 91 points.
Wofford won a total of six Southern Conference individual championships.
Amber Lust won the 100-meter hurdles and the heptathlon.
McLeod Dean added wins in the 100-meters and 200-meters, while
Conrad Heinrich won the decathlon.
Hannah Steelman won the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Overall ten school records were set in the meet. Individuals earning All-Southern Conference honors included
Hannah Steelman (3,000-meter steeplechase, 3,000 meters and 1,500 meters),
Amber Lust (100-meter hurdles and heptathlon),
McLeod Dean (100-meters and 200-meters),
Conrad Heinrich (decathlon),
William Stout (decathlon),
Longinus Nnodim (hammer),
Megan Dunn (heptathlon and javelin),
Elijah Bull (400-meter hurdles),
Isaiah Ellis (400-meter hurdles),
Jaylen Muhammad (200-meters),
Shakaiya Bradford (heptathlon), and
Austin Lufkin (shot put and discus) for a school-record total of 18 honors. The Terriers also had a total of nine All-Freshman Team honors.
"Words cannot describe how happy I am for our team," said head coach
Johnny Bomar. "Both the men and the women really came together this season behind the amazing leadership of our senior class. Every day they came out and worked to get better. The hard work paid off for them this weekend and I am so proud."
The day began with the conclusion of the heptathlon.
Megan Dunn was first in the javelin and 800 meters. Overall,
Amber Lust took first place with a school-record 5,005 points.
Megan Dunn was second with 4,798 points and
Shakaiya Bradford was third at 4,703 points. In the final five events of the decathlon,
Conrad Heinrich was first in the 110-meter hurdles, javelin and 1,500 meters, setting a new Southern Conference record in the 1,500 meters at 4:39.17.
William Stout won the pole vault. When the final points were tallied,
Conrad Heinrich was first overall with a school-record 6,574 points. He becomes the first Terrier to win back-to-back Southern Conference championships for the men. He also won the 2019 indoor heptathlon, giving Heinrich a total of three titles in his career.
William Stout was third overall (6,096) and
T.J. Maxey (4,775) was fifth.
In the women's 4x100 relay, the team of
Amber Lust,
McLeod Dean,
Chandler Robinson and
Alexandra Burgess was fourth with a school-record time of 46.62. The men's 4x100 team of
Omar Mingo,
Bosco Bapoupeleh,
Cody Chavis and
Jaylen Muhammad also set a school record in 41.64 to finish fourth.
In the 100-meter hurdles,
Amber Lust won the title by lowering her school record time to 13.68.
McLeod Dean defended her title in the 100-meters by running a school-record time of 11.57. Dean followed by winning the 200-meters in 23.56, taking the event for the second-straight season. Dean also won the 60-meters and 200-meters at the 2019 Indoor Championship, giving her at total of six career individual titles.
Hannah Steelman took third place in the 1,500 meters in 4:22.87 and was second in the 5,000 meters in 16:53.63.
Jack Zemp was sixth overall in the men's 1,500 meters in a school record time of 3:54.39.
Jonathan Hall ran the 110-meter hurdles in 15.14 for seventh place.
Kassidy Morton was fourth in the women's 400 meters in 56.25. In the men's 400 meters,
Elijah Bull was fifth in 49.10 and
Bradford Smith was seventh in 50.06.
Jaylen Muhammad was fifth in the 100 meters in 10.92.
Madison Paraskeva ran the 800 meters in 2:12.97 for a sixth-place finish. In the women's 400-meter hurdles,
Kassidy Morton was fourth in 1:02.89 to set a new school record.
LeAndrea Combo was fifth in 1:05.07 in the event as well. For the men in the 400-meter hurdles,
Elijah Bull was second overall at 53.77 and
Isaiah Ellis was third at 53.68, with
Jonathan Hall taking eighth in 58.54.
Austin Lufkin was third in the shot put at 15.56 meters and
Longinus Nnodim was fifth at 14.88 meters. Lufkin added a third-place finish in the discus with a throw of 47.78 meters.
The 4x400 relay ended the day's competition. The women's team of
Amber Lust,
Olivia Head,
Madison Paraskeva and
Kassidy Morton was fourth overall at 3:53.75. The men's team of
Sam Larkin,
Bradford Smith,
Joe Harbacevich and
Elijah Bull was sixth overall in 3:23.31.
The NCAA Regionals will be held on May 24-25 in Jacksonville, Florida for those that qualify.
