SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College infielder
John Dempsey has been named to the 2019
Baseball America Freshmen All-American second team. The staff of
Baseball America selected the Freshman All-America teams.
Dempsey, from Potomac, Maryland, started 60 games at third base. He finished fourth on the team with a .324 batting average, tied for second with seven home runs, and fourth with 41 RBIs. Among Southern Conference leaders he was first in doubles (22), ninth in hits (72) and ninth in slugging percentage (.536). He was named All-Southern Conference second team by the media and coaches and also earned All-America honors from
Collegiate Baseball.
He is one of only two players from the Southern Conference to be named to the Freshman All-America team, along with Samford's Sonny DiChiara. Dempsey is the first Terrier to be named Freshman All-America by
Baseball America.
Arizona and UC Santa Barbara have two honorees on the teams, the only schools with multiple honorees. In all, 30 schools are represented on the two teams.
