Where are they now? Janna White

Janna White (formerly Webb) ’03 earned four varsity letters while competing for the volleyball team at Wofford, being named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll in all four seasons. Webb is one of 12 players to record 1,000 or more kills all-time as a Terrier, ranking sixth with 1,170 to her name. Webb lives with her husband in Houston, Texas, and the couple has three children.

How did you decide to attend Wofford?

I knew I wanted to attend Wofford shortly after arriving on campus during my official volleyball visit. I enjoyed meeting the volleyball team and Coach (Joe) Bowman. After the campus tour and meeting with students, I wanted to verbally commit to Wofford as soon as possible. My family encouraged me to visit other schools first, however, none of the other schools compared to Wofford.

What is your favorite Wofford volleyball memory?

I have many wonderful memories of my teammates at Wofford. Our team moved the program forward each year, and my fond memories include the small victories earned along the way, such as our preseason tournament win during my sophomore year. Our tournament win came after a tough season my freshman year. Overall, our record during my senior year was a significant improvement over our record during my freshman year, and advancing the volleyball program was an accomplishment.

What is your favorite Wofford memory?

I enjoyed my time at Wofford, and it is difficult to select one specific moment. Bid Day at the beginning of my freshman year was amazing! I was proud to become a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. I was also selected to travel to South Africa and Zimbabwe with Ellen Goldey and Ted Monroe through an Interim scholarship. The opportunity was truly a blessing, and I will never forget the faces of the children in the township in Cape Town. I studied abroad for the spring semester of my junior year in Alcala de Henares, Spain. I remain in contact with my host family to this day.  I traveled to Amsterdam, Dublin, Rome, Lisbon, as well as to many cities in Spain while studying abroad.

How did competing as a student-athlete prepare you for life after Wofford?

As a student-athlete, I learned time management skills, the importance of hard work, and to have fun. A volleyball season consisted of approximately 30 games in the fall. A long day for a volleyball player included class, hours on the vans to a game, the game, and then the return trip to campus. Most volleyball players studied on the vans before and after games.  Even with all of the hard work, I took the time to meet other students and to enjoy the campus events to ensure I had the full Wofford Experience.

Do you have a favorite Wofford professor or mentor that impacted you?

My favorite Wofford professors were James Proctor, Susan Griswold, and Frank Machovec. All three impacted my life immensely, and I have fond memories of their classes and our conversations.

My job is rewarding and challenging, and my time as a student-athlete at Wofford afforded me the necessary preparation for the position.

Could you tell us a little about what you are doing now and your career path?

I began working as a Healthcare Representative with Pfizer, Inc. five days after graduation in 2003. Years later, I applied to a federal law enforcement position, and I was assigned to my first office in Memphis, Tennessee. My job is rewarding and challenging, and my time as a student-athlete at Wofford afforded me the necessary preparation for the position.

What piece of advice would you give to current Wofford student-athletes?

I would advise student-athletes to work hard, enjoy the time playing with your teammates, and have fun. I would also encourage them to make the most of their time at Wofford and cultivate relationships with other members of the student body.
