LEXINGTON, Va. – The Wofford College men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the VMI Indoor Classic held on Friday and Saturday at the at the Corps Physical Training Facility. Four school records were broken and numerous top ten finishes were recorded by the Terriers in the final meet before the conference championship.
On Friday in the track events, the women's distance relay team of
Taryn Schoen,
Madison Paraskeva,
Sommer McKenzie and
Hannah Steelman took first place in a school record time of 11:55.98.
Destiny Shippy was the top qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.80 and in the semifinals ran a 8.72 to advance to the finals on Saturday.
Isaiah Ellis was fourth in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.22 and in the semifinals went 8.18 to advance to the Saturday finals.
Jaylen Muhammad was 12th in the 60 meters at 7.03 and ran a 7.00 in the semifinals. In the women's 60 meters,
Georgia McDevitt was second in the preliminaries at 7.73 and second in the semifinals at 7.66 to reach the Saturday finals.
Destiny Shippy also qualified for the finals with a 7.80 in the semifinals.
Elijah Bull was eighth in the 400 meters at 49.58 to set a new school record.
Kassidy Morton ran a 57.98 in the 400 meters to take seventh place.
Jack Zemp was seventh in the 1,000 meters at 2:30.80. The men's distance relay team was fourth at 10:50.52.
In Saturday's track events,
Hannah Steelman won the mile with a time of 4:45.52, 11 seconds faster than the second-place finisher from Richmond.
Madison Paraskeva was sixth in the event at 5:04.69.
Jack Zemp was seventh in the men's mile at 4:22.45. In the finals of the women's 60-meter hurdles, Destin Shippy was second at 8.85 and
Kerrington Johnson was fifth at 9.03.
Isaiah Ellis was fourth in the men's 60-meter hurdles at 8.22. In the finals of the women's 60 meters,
Georgia McDevitt was second at 7.60 and
Destiny Shippy was sixth at 7.90.
Madison Paraskeva added a ninth place in the 800 meters at 2:18.78, with
Sommer McKenzie .2 behind in tenth place.
Jaylen Muhammad was 15
th in the 200 meters at 22.33, while
Rylee Jorgensen was sixth in the women's 200 meters in 25.39. The men's 4x400 relay team of
Sam Larkin,
Bradford Smith,
Cody Chavis and
Elijah Bull set a new school record of 3:21.38.
During the weekend's field events,
Nate Myers was 18
th in the weight throw at 14.99 meters.
Netanya Linares was fourth in the pole vault at 3.05 meters.
Jenna Reid set a new school record in the weight throw at 14.15 meters.
Tanner Henry was fifth in the high jump at 2.00 meters. In the women's long jump,
Georgia McDevitt was second at 5.83 meters and
Rylee Jorgensen was sixth at 5.61 meters.
Over 40 schools competed in the meet, including Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, George Mason, Richmond, Virginia Tech, UNC Asheville, Western Carolina and Winthrop.
Up next, the Southern Conference Championship will be held on February 29 and March 1 in Lexington, Virginia.
