LEXINGTON, Va. – On the opening day of the 2020 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held at VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility, Wofford College had strong overall performances.
Megan Dunn and
Hannah Steelman both won Southern Conference titles on Saturday for the Terriers.
The women's team is second (42 points) and the men's squad is currently eighth (4 points) after the first day of events.
Megan Dunn won the heptathlon and
Hannah Steelman won a title in the 3,000 meters. Five school records were set on the first day. Sixteen Terriers also advanced to the Sunday finals. A total of seven All-Freshman Team honors were received on Saturday as well.
In the women's pentathlon,
Megan Dunn finished first with a school record 3,552 points and earned All-Southern Conference honors.
Netanya Linares was third at 3,381 points and
Shakaiya Bradford was fourth at 3,374. Dunn was first in the 60-meter hurdles, 800 meters and second in the high jump. Bradford was first in the high jump at a school record 1.64 meters and first in the shot put at 12.66 meters. Linares was third in the long jump.
Hannah Steelman ran the 3,000 meters in 9:14.48 to claim the championship. It was her first individual indoor title to go along with two outdoor titles and two cross country championships. Second place in the event went to Savannah Carnahan of Furman at 9:31.31, who won the race in 2019.
For the men in the opening four events of the heptathlon,
Tanner Henry is third with 2,710 points,
William Stout is sixth at 2,533 points and
T.J. Maxey is eighth at 2,284 points. Top finishes for the Terriers were Henry with a first place in the high jump, Stout a third place in the shot put and Maxey a fourth place in the 60 meters.
In the shot put, Kelly Hogan was ninth overall with a school record mark of 12.68 meters.
Georgia McDevitt was third in the long jump at 5.85 to earn All-SoCon honors.
Tanner Henry was seventh in the high jump at 1.95 meters. The men's distance relay team of
Ford McCoy,
Cody Chavis,
Bradford Smith and
Jack Zemp was seventh overall. In the final race of the day, the women's distance medley team of
Taryn Schoen,
Kerrington Johnson,
Sommer McKenzie and
Madison Paraskeva was fourth in a time of 12:24.25.

Samford is currently in first place in both the men's (54.5 points) and women's (71 points) championship. The championship will conclude on Sunday, with a full day of events beginning with the last three events of the men's heptathlon and ending with the 4x400 relays.
