Baseball Visits Mercer For Weekend SoCon Series

THIS WEEKEND
The Terriers will travel to Mercer for a weekend Southern Conference series beginning on Friday, with a doubleheader on Saturday ... Wofford has opened the season 13-7 overall after winning two of the three games at The Citadel over the weekend and adding a 5-1 win over Davidson on Tuesday night ... Last season Wofford was 14-3 after a 4-3 win over #14 Auburn before the season was halted ... The Terriers were picked third by the coaches and media in the SoCon Preseason Polls ... Mercer is 11-9 on the season after a series sweep of Bradley last weekend after the SoCon series against Western Carolina was postponed and earned a 5-3 win at Georgia State on Tuesday ... They were picked to finish second in the preseason polls after a 13-3 record in 2020 ... The Bears hold a 22-13 lead in the series over the Terriers that began in 1905 ... In 2019 the Terriers won two of the three games played in Spartanburg ... The teams will also meet on May 21 and 22 in Spartanburg with the new SoCon divisional scheduling format this season ... Wofford weekend series starters will be LHP Hayes Heinecke (1-2, 5.19 ERA), RHP Josh Vitus (0-1, 7.36 ERA) and RHP Elliot Carney (1-2, 5.23 ERA) ... The Mercer rotation will be RHP Garett Delano (1-0, 3.38 ERA), RHP Tommy Green (1-2, 9.50 ERA), and RHP Jackson Kelley (2-2, 3.46 ERA).

• The 36 wins in 2019 were the second-most in school history (39 in 2015). Wofford has won 20 or more games in nine straight seasons and have reached 30 or more wins in five of the last six seasons.

ABOUT WOFFORD
In the 2021 season, the team returns four starters in the field along with 13 pitchers ... Overall 26 players returned to the team with 17 newcomers ... This marks the 14th season under the direction of head coach Todd Interdonato ... Leading the team are eight seniors: Elliot Carney, Colin Davis, Jake Dippold, Lawson Hill, Clay Schwaner, Josh Vitus, David Yourke and Jake Zoller ... Among the pitchers, Hayes Heinecke was 3-1 with a 1.75 ERA and he was named the SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year ... Dalton Rhadans was 4-0 with a 2.35 ERA as a reliver and was tied for first in the SoCon in wins ... Josh Vitus was 1-1 and posted a 2.18 ERA in five starts ... Lawson Hill led the team with a .467 batting average that was second in the SoCon ... Colin Davis was fifth in the league in hits with 23 and had a .348 batting average ... John Dempsey hit .314 with three home runs.

IN THE NCAA RANKINGS
Wofford is currently in top 20 nationally in walks (14th), stolen bases (5th), sacrifice bunts (16th), stolen bases per game (14th) and walked allowed per nine innings (12th) ... Individually Lawson Hill is ranked in doubles (6th) and Jack Renwick is 17th in stolen bases.

LAST TIME AGAINST MERCER
Wofford won two of the three games in the series played in Spartanburg in 2019. On Friday night, Wofford won 4-1. The Terriers won the Saturday contest 11-2. Mercer took the Sunday game 4-1. Mercer leads the all-time series that began in 1905 by a 20-13 margin.
