SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Ryan Marter (-7) made history for the Wofford men's golf program on Tuesday afternoon, claiming the individual title at the Wofford Invitational to pace the Terriers to a runner-up finish and become the first Wofford player to finish as the individual medalist since the event's establishment in 1988.

Marter finished with a career-low score of 209 for the tournament, as he entered the par-4 18th hole with a one-stroke lead over Georgia State's Maxence Mugnier and WCU's Pierre Viallaneix. Viallaneix would bogey, as Mugnier and Marter both finished par to see Marter finish 1-under with four birdies for the day (71) to secure the individual title.

"It's awesome," said Marter of the feeling of being the individual medalist. "Still a little bit surreal. I didn't know that I would be the first Wofford guy to win it. It's a lot of hard work over the past couple years that's just now starting to show off."

Additionally, the performance marked Marter's first career individual title for the Terriers in his senior season, while he also tied for first amongst the field of 81 players in par-4 scoring at 3-under.

Wofford (-5) added its fifth all-time runner-up finish at the Wofford Invitational, tied for second with Western Carolina (-5), as the Terriers finished 3-over for the day to conclude with a total score of 859. Georgia State (-17) won the tournament's crown by 12 strokes, as GSU's Mugnier (-6) finished runner-up to Marter by a stroke.

The Terriers finished seven strokes better than the next closest team, as Wofford scored wins over Francis Marion (+2), Charleston Southern (+6), Radford (+8), Samford (+18), USC Upstate (+23), Gardner-Webb (+24), Eastern Kentucky (+25), Mercer (+27), Winthrop (+27), Longwood (+29) and Presbyterian (+30).

Additionally, Wofford saw another top-10 finish in sophomore Matthew Larkin (-3), as Larkin recorded a career-performance in finishing tied for seventh with a career-low of 213 for the tournament. Larkin finished with a 1-over-par 73 in the final round, as he tied for second for the most birdies among the field (15) while also ranking third amongst the field in par-4s at 2-under.

Junior Matthew Copeland (+3) finished tied for 24th, while senior Nick Willis (+6) finished tied for 37th. Copeland led the entire field in pars, with 40, as he finished the day even-par for total score of 219. Willis' day was highlighted by an even front nine, that saw three birdies, as the senior finished with a 75 to conclude a score of 222.

Junior Walker Jones (+8) rounds out the Terriers in the lineup, as Jones finished solid on the back nine to record a 75 and finish tied for 47th with a score of 224.

The Terriers also fielded a Wofford B team of five players among the field, highlighted by senior Matt Teaster (+2) who finished tied for 20th after finishing even-par with four birdies on the day. Sophomore Jackson Hill (+4) finished tied for 30th with two birdies on the day, while freshman Jay Beach used a 1-under-par 71 to finish tied for 37th.

Freshman Harry Jones (+14) and sophomore Bailey Means (+29) round out the Terriers competing, tied for 64th and 80th, respectively.

Next, Wofford prepares for the 2021 Southern Conference Championships, hosted in Greensboro, Georgia from Monday, April 19-20 at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Golf Course.

"Individually, I couldn't think of a better way to go into it," said Marter of carrying momentum into next's week SoCon Championship. "Team-wise, I think we're just one click away of getting it done ourselves and I'm really looking forward to going down to Georgia and playing at Lake Reynolds."
