Baseball Travels To WCU For Weekend Series

THIS WEEK
The Terriers are playing four games in North Carolina this week ... On Tuesday night they were defeated 9-6 by Duke in Durham, followed by a three-game series at Western Carolina in Cullowhee ... Wofford has opened the season 30-17 overall and 17-7 in the SoCon after a series sweep over The Citadel this past weekend ... Last season Wofford was 14-3 after a 4-3 win over #14 Auburn before the season was halted ... The Terriers were picked third by the coaches and media in the SoCon Preseason Polls ... Western Carolina is 22-17 overall and 10-9 in the SoCon on the season after being swept by Mercer over the weekend ... They were picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches poll after an 8-8 record in 2020 ... The Catamounts hold a 74-26 lead in the series over the Terriers that began in 1950 ... Earlier this season Wofford won two of the three games played in Spartanburg with the new SoCon divisional scheduling format this season  ... Starters for the weekend series for Wofford will be RHP Josh Vitus (2-3, 7.21 ERA), RHP Devon Sharts (0-0, 5.11 ERA) and current SoCon Pitcher of the Week RHP Elliot Carney (5-2, 2.66 ERA) ... The Catamounts will go with RHP Jack Snyder (0-0, 4.91), RHP Tristen Campbell (2-1, 5.32) and RHP Gavin Mortenson (2-0, 4.88) for the series.

In the 2021 season, the team returns four starters in the field along with 13 pitchers ... Overall 26 players returned to the team with 17 newcomers ... This marks the 14th season under the direction of head coach Todd Interdonato ... Leading the team are eight seniors: Elliot Carney, Colin Davis, Jake Dippold, Lawson Hill, Clay Schwaner, Josh Vitus, David Yourke and Jake Zoller ... Among the pitchers, Hayes Heinecke is 2-4 with a 4.40 ERA and he was named the SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year ... Dalton Rhadans is 5-0 with a 2.39 ERA and six saves as a reliever ... Elliot Carney is 5-2 with a 2.66 ERA and a league-high 87 strikeouts ... Clay Schwaner has three saves and a 0.50 ERA ... Nolen Hester leads the team with a .373 batting average ... Colin Davis has a .350 batting average, along with team-bests in doubles, home runs and RBIs ... Trey Yunger, Lawson Hill, Jack Renwick and John Dempsey also have 40 or more hits ... Wofford is currently in top 30 in walks (8th), stolen bases (2nd), sacrifice bunts (3rd), hits (28th), runs (27th), sacrifice flies (20th), on base percentage (21st), doubles (14th), stolen bases per game (5th), WHIP (29th) and walks allowed per nine innings (12th) ... Individually Nolen Hester is 45th in on base percentage and 77th in batting average, Colin Davis is 86th in slugging percentage, Lawson Hill is 46th in walks and the 41st toughest to strikeout, Zeb Roos is 37th in hit by pitch and 10th in sacrifice flies, Elliot Carney is 32nd in strikeouts, Dalton Rhadans is 62nd in ERA and Jack Renwick is 5th in stolen bases and 4th in sacrifice bunts.

LAST TIME AGAINST WCU
Wofford won two of the three games in the series played in Spartanburg earlier this season. On Friday, April 2, Wofford won 6-5 as they scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning. In the Saturday doubleheader, the Terriers won the first game 12-9. The Catamounts scored six runs in the eighth inning of game two for an 11-6 win. Western Carolina leads the all-time series that began in 1950 by a 74-26 margin.

SCHEDULE CHANGE
The game that was scheduled for Wednesday, May 19 at Russell C. King Field against Winthrop has been canceled. The Terriers will now travel to Kennesaw State on Tuesday, May 18 for a 3:00 PM contest.
