Baseball Hosts Mercer For Final Home Series

THIS WEEKEND
The Terriers host Mercer for the final series of the regular season ... Both teams have already qualified for the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament, but both teams - along with Samford - could still earn the regular season title and #1 seed ... Wofford has opened the season 32-18 overall and 19-8 in the SoCon after a series win at Western Carolina and a 5-4 victory at Kennesaw State on Tuesday ... Last season Wofford was 14-3 after a 4-3 win over #14 Auburn before the season was halted ... The Terriers were picked third by the coaches and media in the SoCon Preseason Polls ... Mercer is 34-18 on the season and 17-7 in the Southern Conference after winning two of three games against The Citadel over the weekend and a 5-1 win over Georgia Southern on Tuesday night ... They were picked to finish second in the preseason polls after a 13-3 record in 2020 ... The Bears hold a 24-14 lead in the series over the Terriers that began in 1905 ... Earlier this season, Mercer won two of the three games played in Macon ... Wofford weekend series starters will be RHP Josh Vitus (3-3, 6.27 ERA), RHP Dom Marcoccio (2-0, 3.90 ERA) and RHP Elliot Carney (5-3, 2.96 ERA) ... The Mercer rotation will be RHP Garett Delano (5-1, 4.13 ERA) and RHP Tommy Green (4-2, 5.65 ERA), with the third game to be determined.

In the 2021 season, the team returns four starters in the field along with 13 pitchers ... Overall 26 players returned to the team with 17 newcomers ... This marks the 14th season under the direction of head coach Todd Interdonato ... Leading the team are eight seniors: Elliot Carney, Colin Davis, Jake Dippold, Lawson Hill, Clay Schwaner, Josh Vitus, David Yourke and Jake Zoller ... Among the pitchers, Hayes Heinecke is 2-4 with a 4.40 ERA and he was named the SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year ... Dalton Rhadans is 5-0 with a 2.94 ERA and seven saves as a reliever ... Elliot Carney is 5-3 with a 2.96 ERA and a league-high 92 strikeouts ... Clay Schwaner has three saves and a 1.40 ERA ... Colin Davis leads the teams with a .360 batting average, along with team-bests in doubles, home runs and RBIs ... Nolen Hester is batting .356 with a .428 on base percentage ... 2021 SOCON TOURNAMENT
The 2021 Southern Conference Tournament begins next week in Greenville at Fluor Field. Mercer, Samford and Wofford have qualified for the tournament, with the final spot up for grabs. Wofford can be the #1, #2 or #3 seed based on the outcome of the series with Mercer. Western Carolina, ETSU, VMI and UNCG are still in the running for the #4 seed.

IN THE NCAA RANKINGS
Wofford is currently in top 30 in walks (7th), stolen bases (2nd), sacrifice bunts (3rd), hits (19th), runs (16th), sacrifice flies (16th), on base percentage (19th), doubles (12th), stolen bases per game (5th), and fewest walks allowed per nine innings (13th) ... Individually Nolen Hester is 87th in on base percentage and 73rd in hits; Colin Davis is 69th in slugging percentage, 79th in runs, 73rd in hits, and 61st in doubles; Lawson Hill is 38th in walks and the 33rd toughest to strikeout; Zeb Roos is 55th in hit by pitch and 14th in sacrifice flies; Elliot Carney is 40th in strikeouts; Dalton Rhadans is 37th in saves; and Jack Renwick is 5th in stolen bases and 6th in sacrifice bunts.

LAST TIME AGAINST THE CITADEL
Mercer won two of the three games in the series played in Macon earlier this season. On Friday night, Mercer won 6-4. The Bears won the first game of the Saturday doubleheader 13-7 with Wofford bouncing back to take the second game 12-2 in seven innings. Mercer leads the all-time series that began in 1905 by a 24-14 margin.
