Terriers Men’s Soccer Edged on Late Goal, Falls 2-1 to Georgia State

Box Score ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wofford College men's soccer team fell to the Georgia State Panthers 2-1 on Friday night in Atlanta, Ga. The Terriers struck first, but the Panthers scored the next two goals, including the game-winner in the 89th minute, to secure the victory on their home turf.
 
It took four minutes before either team could get off a shot, with Georgia State firing the first one, but it was blocked. It would be another five minutes before the Panthers would get off another shot, missing wide. Magnus Kjoller drew a yellow card in the 18th minute, but even with the early struggles, Wofford struck first with their first shot at 22:52 mark. Brandon Oddy found the bottom right of the net from the assist by Hugo Moldin to put the Terriers up 1-0. Wofford got off two more shots, but neither were on target. The Panthers then responded, however, with a blocked shot in the 29th minute, and then they secured the equalizer with 29:12 on the clock. Matthew St. Fearnley received the pass from Ross Finnie and slotted it into the bottom right corner to pull Georgia State level. Each team would have an unsuccessful shot before the end of the half, and the squads entered the break tied.
 
Both teams had some chances to start the second half, but to no avail. Wofford fired the first shot of the half in the 55th minute off the boot of Mitchell Myers, but it was saved. Georgia State followed suit with a shot of their own in the next minute, but Joshua Old secured it for his first save of the match. The Panthers put on another shot in the 60th minute, but it was once again saved. The Terriers followed suit with a plethora of unsuccessful chances, firing two shots that were saved in the 63rd and 64th minutes. Brandon Oddy tried for his second goal of the night, but he missed wide. Georgia State then fired off three more shots of their own, but to no avail. Nic Parker's attempt in the 72nd minute was met with another Panther save. Georgia State's Ross Finnie received a yellow card in the 76th minute, but they were able to get off another shot a minute later that went off target. The squads traded unsuccessful shots again, but with 88:31 on the clock, Georgia State pulled ahead when an Ethan Sassine shot went into the bottom right corner. Alex Dennis took one last shot to try to pull the Terriers even with a minute left, but it was blocked to secure the victory for the Panthers.
 
Wofford (3-4-0, 1-0-0) had 11 shots while Georgia State (6-2-0, 0-0-0) posted 14. The Panthers also held an advantage in corner kicks over the Terriers, 6-4. Joshua Old (3-3-0) totaled four saves for Wofford. Gunther Rankenburg (6-2-0) secured five saves for the Panthers on the night.
 
The Terriers continue their five-game road slate with a trip to Charlotte, N.C. to play the Charlotte 49ers on Tuesday, September 28 at 7:00 pm.
