SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's golf team was led by the freshman duo of
Xuan Khue Minh Doan and
Ella Stoll at the Terrier Intercollegiate, as they each posted career-best finishes. Doan placed ninth while Stoll tied for 20
th to help Wofford finish ninth as the host of the 17-team field at the Carolina Country Club, a par-72, 6,056-yard course.
Taylor Burch also tied for 20
th as an individual to give Wofford three Terriers inside the top 20.
Wofford scored 925 in the event for the top-10 finish, its 11
th in the last 12 events. After a tough opening round of 321, the Terriers bounced back in the afternoon to post a sub-300 round of 298 to move up into eighth place at the end of day one. Despite dropping one spot in the final round with a 306, the Terriers preserved their top-10 placement to card a 61-over par score.
The Terriers secured wins over eight teams, including fellow SoCon foe The Citadel. Three other Palmetto State teams placed behind Wofford: Winthrop, Presbyterian and USC Beaufort. The field featured the only other Terriers in Division I, Boston, who placed in sixth. Another SoCon team in Samford finished in third, two strokes behind South Dakota who had claimed the lead after day one. But it was crosstown rival USC Upstate taking home the team title after utilizing a 9-over par 297 in the final round to jump four spots and beat South Dakota by three strokes.
To help USC Upstate sweep the team and individual titles, Praew Nontarux carded an even-par 72 in the final round to move up two spots and claim a comeback individual win.
Wofford was led by the freshman duo of
Xuan Khue Minh Doan and
Ella Stoll. Doan secured her first-career top-10 finish with an eight-over 224. After starting with a 77 in round one, Doan immediately righted the ship with a 73 in round two. She followed up with a final-round 74 to move up into ninth. The Hanoi, Vietnam native has now placed in the top 20 in three of her four collegiate tournaments.
In just her second collegiate tournament, Stoll earned her first-career top-20 result by tying for 20
th by way of a 231. Despite a stumble out of the gates with an opening 83, she recovered nicely to card a 75 in round two. Further improvement in round three with a career-low round of 73 saw Stoll leap a whopping 24 spots on the leaderboard for her new career best.
Not to be outdone, sophomore
Taylor Burch also earned her first-career top-20 finish with a 231, tying with Stoll for 20
th. Competing as an individual, Burch improved with each round, carding 79-77-75, to move up 14 spots in the final day for her first top-20. This result gives Wofford three golfers inside the top 20 for the first time this season.
Lindsey Hollis and
Maggie Jackson each improved their scores in round two but suffered stumbles in the final round. Hollis shot 81-73-80 to card a 234 and tie for 33
rd. Jackson carded 80-77-83 for a final score of 240 to finish tied for 52
nd.
Nicole Amos rounds out the Wofford lineup with a 244 in a tie for 61
st.
Joining Burch as individuals were
Lilli Horn and
Karola Soe. Horn made her collegiate debut in the event, scoring 76-79-80 to shoot 235 and tie for 40
th. Soe finished in 71
st with a score of 249.
Wofford wraps up its fall slate next week at the Mercer Invitational. The two-day event in Macon, Ga. begins on Monday, Oct. 31 and wraps up the following day on Nov. 1.
