SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today its September players of the month for all in-season sports, with Wofford volleyball's
Sarah Barham garnering Defensive Player of the Month honors. The selection is made by the league office.
Â
This recognition is the second of Barham's career, last earning it in November last season. That was also the last time a Terrier earned the distinction. This nod for Barham is just the third ever by a Terrier, joining Jessica Graham who won the program's first defensive player of the month honor in October of 2015. Barham becomes now the program's first-ever two-time recipient of the award.
Â
Barham is the latest in a line of Terriers receiving Southern Conference recognition this week after fellow teammates
Victoria Hensley and
Kennedy Smith earned player of the week honors on Monday. It's a second-straight day with Terrier recognition as Smith was honored with a student-athlete of the week selection yesterday. Barham's monthly nod makes her the third different Terrier rewarded this week for a fourth overall award.
Â
Barham was a terror at the net for Wofford's opponents all throughout the month of September, swatting 49 total blocks and averaging 1.14 per set. Just a hair under an even 50 blocks for the month, the Summerfield, N.C. native led the Terriers in blocking in seven of the team's 12 matches, including posting the Wofford single-match high on the year of eight against USC Upstate.
Â
At the conclusion of the month, Barham ranked as the SoCon's leader in blocks per set with 1.15 and in total blocks with 63. Those 63 swats ranked 48
th in the NCAA. After adding three matches in October, Barham currently ranks 40
th in the nation in total blocks with 71 while continuing to pace the league in both that and blocks per set at 1.11.
Â
A two-way threat, Barham's offense contributed 107 kills in September for 2.49 per set. The junior ranked second on the squad in both marks. She was efficient, too, hitting at a .374 percentage, also second on the team. In addition, her seven service aces sat fifth on the squad for the month to be a triple-threat nightmare for her opponents.
Â
The Terriers currently sit at 12-6 on the season with a 4-2 SoCon record. Wofford is riding a four-match winning streak, with the last three each being straight-set sweeps. After downing The Citadel last night, the Terriers are now entering a week off from action before returning to the court for a pair of road contests next weekend at Mercer and Samford on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
