Women’s Basketball Routs App State to Win Sixth-Straight Game

Hatton secures 500th rebound; Rose notches double-double in home triumph

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team was on fire from the jump inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium Saturday afternoon, opening on a 15-0 run against App State and never looking back en route to a 71-42 win. The triumph lifts the Terriers to 6-2 on the season, and the Mountaineers fall to 2-5.

The win is Wofford's sixth in a row, tying the program's Division I record. It was set twice before, once in the 2007-08 season and again in the 2011-12 campaign. The Terriers have also extended their home winning streak to six dating back to last season.

"That's really cool," said head coach Jimmy Garrity of the record-tying six-game win streak. "It's not something we really think about or talk about, and to be honest, I didn't even really know that. I just give our players all the credit. They've bought in, and we've played a tough schedule. I mean, App State is a really good team. They're so well-coached, they're so athletic. They can score at three levels, and our players are just playing together. They're really focused right now, and they're doing an unbelievable job of following the gameplan."

Wofford controlled just about every facet of the game. The Terriers shot 47.5 percent from the field at a 29-of-61 clip and 33.3 percent from three at a 7-of-21 rate. Wofford also set a season high with 46 rebounds while holding App State to 25. With 15 assists, Wofford tied its season high. The Terrier defense was stout, holding the Mountaineers to 27.1 percent shooting (16-of-59) and 18.8 percent from three (6-of-32). Wofford forced 19 App State turnovers for 24 extra points while securing 10 steals and swatting a season-high four blocks.

With three double-digit scorers, the Terriers have totaled at least three with double figures in all eight games this season. Jackie Carman led the way with 19 points for her ninth consecutive double-digit outing. With eight boards, Carman tied her career high while also dishing three assists and swiping two steals.

"It feels great," said Carman of tying her career-high rebounding mark. "I think as a team we were just hounding the boards. I think we doubled their board output, but I think as a team we were just being very tenacious."

Lilly Hatton netted 13 points, but the highlight of her day was her six rebounds. Those six boards were just enough to get Hatton to over 500 in her career, making her the 23rd Terrier in program history to join the 500-rebound club. She added three blocks in the contest.

"It's great," said Hatton of her 500-career rebounds. "I've had wonderful teammates and wonderful coaches for a long career, so this is really exciting, and it really commemorates four great years of playing for a great team."

"I'm just really happy for her," said Garrity of Hatton's milestone. "She's such a great representative of our program and of the college, and she plays really hard, comes to practice and gives us a great effort day in and day out both on and off the court. So to see her get 500-plus is quite an accomplishment."

Rachael Rose tallied 10 points and added a career-high 13 rebounds to lead the team. The double-double is her first as a Terrier and the first by any Terrier this season, and it's the fourth of her career. She dished four assists to top the team.

Helen Matthews was just shy of double-digits with nine points, and she added four boards. Annabelle Schultz and Sydnee Richetto each also secured four rebounds, and they scored seven and six points, respectively. The pair each recorded three steals to tie for the team lead.

Ja'Rae Smith scored three points and dished two assists, and Indiya Clarke totaled two points and two boards. Abbey Crawford rounds out the Wofford scoring with two points. Though scoreless, Jessie Parish pulled down four boards.

The game was scoreless through the first minute and 37 seconds, but Lilly Hatton put home a layup at the 8:23 mark to get Wofford on the board, and the Terriers never looked back. It was all gas and no brakes from there, as Wofford exploded for a 15-0 run to open the contest and land what proved to be an early knockout punch. App State secured its first points nine minutes and two seconds into the game with a three-pointer at the 58 second mark, and Wofford led 17-5 after the first frame.

"It was really big," said Garrity of the opening 15-0 run. "We just came out and we executed, and to be honest, what kept us alive and to build that lead was our offensive rebounding. We were getting second and third chances. And on some of those we didn't convert; we had great looks, and they just didn't fall for us. But it's really important for us to get off to a good start, and then that just set the tone for the rest of the day."

Despite the early hole, App State seemed to find its footing in the second quarter with a 10-point run to pull within four points (21-17) at the 6:29 mark. But the squads traded scores, and Wofford bounced back to end the half on a 16-point run. Rachael Rose sparked the run with a trey, and Jackie Carman followed with a jumper before another Rose triple. Annabelle Schultz and Sydnee Richetto hit back-to-back threes with about a minute left to send Wofford into the break up 39-19.

With Lilly Hatton's jumper to open the third quarter, the Terrier run extended to 18 consecutive points, but a Mountaineer free throw ended the streak. But Helen Matthews popped a triple in response, and Wofford again kept rolling to hold App State to seven points in the third quarter. Jackie Carman put home a jumper with 1:33 left in the quarter for a 55-26 Terrier advantage entering the final frame.

Helen Matthews opened the fourth with a paint score to lift Wofford's lead over 30 points (57-26), and though App State cut it back down to 28 a few minutes later, Lilly Hatton converted a three-point play at the 6:36 mark to lift Wofford over that margin once more at 62-31. App State would score the final five points of the contest, but it was just for pride as Wofford secured the 71-42 win to extend the overall and home winning streaks to six games each.

Wofford concludes its four-game homestand on Monday, Dec. 5 when it hosts Emory & Henry. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. against the Wasps.
