LEXINGTON, Va. – The 2022 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded on Sunday at VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility, with Wofford College winning five individual championships. The women were fourth overall with 104 points, while the men were seventh with 38 points.
The 104 points scored by the women were the second-most in school history, while the fourth-place finish was tied for the second highest. The men's 38 points were the sixth-highest total in school history.
The five individual titles are the most in a single indoor championship for the Terriers, who had ten combined titles in prior seasons (two men, eight women), all of which have been won since 2018. Southern Conference titles were won by
Netanya Linares (pentathlon and high jump),
Kerrington Johnson (60-meter hurdles),
Conor Murphy (400 meters), and
Madeline McNinch (200 meters).
The eleven All-Southern Conference honors earned were the third-most in school history:
Netanya Linares (pentathlon and high jump),
Madeline McNinch (long jump, 60 meters, 200 meters),
Kerrington Johnson (60m hurdles),
Destiny Shippy (60m hurdles),
Cagan Campbell (60 meters),
Conor Murphy (400m),
Jasmine Jefferson (400 meters), and the women's 4x400 meter relay.
Six school records were set or tied during the championship. Terriers also earned a total of ten All-Freshman Team honors during the weekend.
"I am very proud of our results this weekend," said head coach
Johnny Bomar. "The five individual titles won by Netanya, Kerrington, Madeline and Conor were highlights of the meet, but we had numerous performances that showed how hard our team has been working this season."
Sunday began with the completion of the heptathlon, with
Sebastian LaTorre finishing seventh with 4,234 points and
Ben Kendall taking eighth place with 4,226 points.
In the field events Sunday,
Rylee Jorgensen was eighth in the triple jump at 11.21 meters.
Jenna Reid had a distance of 14.98 meters in the weight throw to tie her school record and finish sixth. In the high jump,
Netanya Linares cleared 1.64 meters to win the event and tie the school record. She is just the second Terrier to win two individual indoor titles in the same season, joining McLeod Dean with wins in the 60 meters and 200 meters in 2019.
The women's 60-meter hurdles were won by
Kerrington Johnson for the second straight season in a school record time of 8.48.
Destiny Shippy took second place in 8.55. In the men's 60-meter hurdles,
Grant Witherspoon was seventh at 8.75 and
Elijah Bull was eighth in 8.81.
Cagan Campbell took third place in the men's 60 meters at 6.93. In the women's 60 meters,
Madeline McNinch was third at 7.70, with
Destiny Shippy fifth at 7.73.
Conor Murphy won the 400 meters in a school-record time of 48.24, marking his first career SoCon title and only the third individual indoor title in school history for the men's team.
Elijah Bull was fifth in the event at 49.64. In the women's 400 meters,
Jasmine Jefferson ran a 57.00 to place second overall. The men's 200 meters saw
Cagan Campbell finish fourth in 21.75, which was a new school record. In the women's 200 meters,
Madeline McNinch won her first career conference title with a time of 24.52. It marked the team's second title in the event, as McLeod Dean won it in 2019.
Destiny Shippy added a fourth-place finish at 25.28 and
Jasmine Jefferson was eighth at 25.66.
Carson Archie and
Beck Classey were sixteenth and seventeenth respectively in the men's 5,000 meters, while the women were led by
Alexus Atkins with a 17:55.17 for twelfth place.
To end the day, the men's 4x400 relay team of
Elijah Bull,
Cagan Campbell,
Jackson Casey and
Conor Murphy was fourth with a time of 3:18.83. The women's 4x400 relay team of
Jasmine Jefferson,
Kerrington Johnson,
Georgia McDevitt and
Madeline McNinch was third in a tight race with a time of 3:55.58.
Samford won its seventh straight women's title and third straight men's title. VMI's Jordin Poindexter wont the Heath Whittle Award as the men's Most Outstanding Athletes and Western Carolina's Makaila McIntyre earned the women's Most Outstanding Athlete award.
