Dempsey and Rhadans Earn More Honors as Baseball Sweeps SoCon Monthly Awards

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today its athletes of the month for March across nine sports, with Wofford sweeping the two baseball honors. Seniors John Dempsey and Dalton Rhadans were named Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively. The selections are made by the league office.

This is the first time that the Terriers have won both monthly honors in the same month. Dempsey and Rhadans are the first Wofford recipients of each since 2019. During that campaign, Hayes Heinecke was tabbed Pitcher of the Month in March before Mike Brown won Player of the Month in May. These are the first monthly recognitions for each player in their careers, and they add on to previous weekly selections this season. Dempsey earned a Player of the Week nod on March 21, and Rhadans was named Pitcher of the Week seven days later on March 28.

John Dempsey hit his stride in the month of March, slashing .449/.537/.768 in Wofford's 20 games. All three marks led the Terriers. The senior clobbered five long balls in the month, including a stretch of four home runs in three games from March 15-19. The last game of that span saw the Potomac, Maryland native swat two homers for his only multi-homer game of the season. Dempsey totaled 15 RBI on the month and scored 17 runs. Of his 31 hits, 12 went for extra bases (five home runs and seven doubles). He amassed 53 total bases, pacing the squad as the only Terrier over 40.

Dalton Rhadans anchored the Wofford bullpen during March, leading the squad with a 0.33 ERA over his 13 appearances, all in relief. The senior was a workhorse, tossing 27.2 innings to tie for the team lead. The Acworth, Georgia native recorded a 3-1 record with four saves, allowing only one run and 20 hits. He walked just two batters while tallying 31 punchouts and holding the opposition to a .204 average.

The duo's March performances are just a microcosm of the whole season thus far, as both are among conference and national leaders. Dempsey's season slash line of .380/.477/.620 ranks fifth, fifth and 12th in the SoCon, respectively, and his 41 hits are third. Rhadans boasts six saves, leading the league and ranking 16th in the nation. His 1.05 WHIP is third in the conference.

Wofford was 16-4 during the month of March. This included two separate six-game win streaks, the first from March 9-18. The second ended the month, beginning on March 20 before stretching into April to become and eight-gamer overall, which tied for the longest win streak at the Division I level in program history.

The Terriers at 21-9 overall look to ride that momentum into conference play, as they host UNCG (14-15) tonight at Russell C. King Field. The SoCon opener is set to begin with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
