Wofford Wins Two Titles At SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford College track and field program had another strong performance at the 2022 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Shauna Yelton Field at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium. The women finished fourth overall and the men were seventh.
 
Southern Conference titles were won by the women's 4x100 relay team and Kerrington Johnson in the 100-meter hurdles.
 
The women's team scored 117 points to take fourth place. It marked the third straight season the women have scored 100+ points. The men's squad was seventh overall with 42 points.
 
Overall, twelve All-Southern Conference honors were achieved. A total of seven All-Freshman honors were awarded to Terriers. Wofford set two school records in the meet.
 
"The team fought really hard this weekend," said head coach Johnny Bomar. "We lost some key contributors from last year and came up short in a few places this season. I am proud of this year's senior class who have worked hard for the past four seasons."
 
The day began with the completion of the final three events of the heptathlon. Netanya Linares was first in the long jump, third in the javelin and fourth in the 800 meters to finish second overall with 4,734 points. Marga Van Der Linde was fifth in the javelin and second in the 800 meters as she placed sixth overall with 3,917 points. After the final five events of the decathlon, Sebastian LaTorre was second in the discus throw and fourth in the javelin but was tenth overall with 4,702 points.
 
The running events began on Sunday with the 4x100 meter relay. The Wofford men's team of Christopher Sheppard, Conor Murphy, Elijah Bull and Cagan Campbell finished second in a time of 42.20. The women's team of Destiny Shippy, Georgia McDevitt, Rylee Jorgensen and Madeline McNinch took first place for the second straight season with a school record time of 45.99.
 
In the 100-meter hurdles, Kerrington Johnson won the event in back-to-back years with a time of 13.40. Destiny Shippy was close behind in fourth place at 13.93. In the 110-meter hurdles, Grant Witherspoon was seventh in 15.62. During the 400-meter finals, Cagan Campbell was third in 48.20, Conor Murphy was fourth in 48.26 and Theron Bradford was eighth in 48.81 to score for the Terriers. Jasmine Jefferson was fourth in the women's 400 meters in 56.55, while Dahlia Cutler was seventh in 58.48. Rylee Jorgensen added a sixth-place finish in the triple jump at 11.25 meters.
 
Georgia McDevitt was fourth in the women's 100 meters with a time of 11.91, with Rylee Jorgensen fifth at 12.04. In the 400-meter hurdles, Elijah Bull was third in 53.39 for the men and Kerrington Johnson was third for the women in 1:02.05. In the women's 200 meters, Madeline McNinch was fourth at 24.69 and Jasmine Jefferson was sixth at 24.96. Netanya Linares was second in the high jump at 1.60 meters and Christopher Sheppard was sixth in the triple jump at 13.65 meters.
 
To wrap up the weekend, the Wofford men's 4x400 relay team of Cagan Campbell, Theron Bradford, Conor Murphy and Elijah Bull was second in 3:14.54. The women's team of Dahlia Cutler, Kerrington Johnson, Jasmine Jefferson and Madeline McNinch was also second with a time of 3:50.19.
 
Samford won the men's championship with 226 points and the women's championship with 224 points.
