PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – Despite a tough opening round, the Wofford women's golf team utilized a bounce-back second round to move up the standings and conclude the Golfweek Fall Challenge at Caledonia Golf and Fish Club in 11
th place with a score of 881. Freshman
Xuan Khue Minh Doan led the Terriers with a 2-over par score for a top-20 placement.
Doan opened her collegiate career as the top Terrier in the event, shooting 215 for a 2-over par score. Though opening on day one with a 74, the Hanoi, Vietnam native turned things around with a 1-under score of 70 in round two to move up from 42
nd all the way to 20
th upon the conclusion of the second day. With a par 71 in the final round, Doan would remain in a tie for 20
th to earn her first-career top-20 finish in the 104-player field. In addition, Doan was also one of seven players in the entire field to record an eagle in the event.
Wofford amassed 169 pars in the tournament, fourth-most in the 20-team field. Thanks to Doan, the Terriers were one of five squads to notch an eagle, adding on to the 32 birdies the squad recorded. Wofford got off to a slow start with a first-round 300 (+16) to start in 17
th place. The Terriers improved their total on day two by 13 strokes to turn things around, shooting 287 to move up to 10
th place. Despite a slight stumble of 294 in the final round, Wofford concluded the event tied for 11
th.
The Terriers earned wins over seven squads, including former SoCon foe App State and two other Palmetto State neighbors in Winthrop and Presbyterian. With an 18-under par score (834), Campbell won the event by 16 strokes. Second-place UNC Wilmington was the only other team to score under par at 2-under (850).
Doan tied with
Nicole Amos and
Lindsey Hollis for the team lead with seven birdies each. Hollis finished in a tie for 28
th with a score of 217 (+4) as the next-best finisher behind Doan.
Taylor Burch tied for 54
th with a 224 mark (+11), though her scores steadily improved over the rounds (76-75-73). Amos was next in a tie for 58
th with a score of 225 (+12). Though shooting 76 on day one, she saw an improved par of 71 in the second round, but a final round score of 78 prevented further advancement up the ranks.
Maggie Jackson rounds out the Wofford lineup with a score of 231 (+18) to tie for 81
st.
Wofford will be back in action from Monday, Sept. 26 to Tuesday, Sept. 27 in Greensboro, N.C. The Terriers will be competing in the Grandover Fall Classic, hosted by fellow SoCon member UNCG.
