Spartanburg, S.C.- To cap a stellar regular season, Wofford men's soccer had a conference leading nine players receive postseason honors including the Southern Conference Player of the Year and the Coach of the Year.
Head Coach
Joel Tyson's efforts in guiding a team picked to finish fifth in the SoCon preseason poll to ending the regular season with the program's fourth ever top two finish and first round bye in the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament earned the Irmo, South Carolina native the nod for Coach of the Year. The last time a Wofford coach received the honor was 2009 when Ralph Polson's team won the SoCon Tournament and advanced to Wofford's only NCAA Tournament appearance.
Sophomore
Nikolai Rojel was rewarded with the Player of the Year honor after scoring a conference best 11 goals, 23 points and tied for the conference lead in game-winning goals. Rojel also tallied the match tying goals against then #3 Duke back on August 31, and UNCG on October 14. The sophomore becomes the first Terrier to earn the accolade in program and was also selected to the 2023 First Team-All Conference team to mark the first time a Wofford player has made consecutive Firs Team All-Conferences.
Joining Rojel on the First Team were teammates
Jakob Andersson,
Magnus Kjoller and
Moa Mohammedi. Andersson currently leads the Southern Conference in assists and is tied for tenth in the conference in points. Some of the sophomore's season highlights include assisting on the game winning goals against Radford, Presbyterian, Mercer, and VMI as well as the assist on the match tying goals against UNC Asheville, UNCG. Freshmen
Villads Landsperg and
Fabian Menendez were selected to the All-Freshman team- marking the eighth consecutive season the Terriers have been represented on this team. Menendez was a starter in 12 of his a6 matches played and scored the decisive goal over Radford as well as assisting on the game winning goal against USC Upstate. Landsperg was part of the lauded back line and has been on the pitch for 1,154 minutes of a possible 1,370.
"I've always looked at individual recognition as a smaller picture of the overall success of the team. The players recognized have of course been tremendous in terms of their application of skill and talent on the field. But, they have been highlighted by the efforts and grit of every player inside the program. I speak for every person inside our organization when I say that we are proud of these players for their commitment to our program and all they've accomplished this year," said Coach Tyson on his players recognized by the Southern Conference.
