LEXINGTON, Va. – The Wofford College men's and women's indoor track and field teams took part in the VMI Winter Relays on Friday and Saturday at the Corps Physical Training Facility. The Terriers had seven first place finishes at the meet and a new school record was set by
Cameron Dalton in the 200-meters.
Event victories in the meet for Wofford included
Netanya Linares in the pentathlon,
Jasmine Jefferson in the 400 meters,
Kerrington Johnson in the 60-meter hurdles,
Cameron Dalton in the men's 200-meters,
Madeline McNinch in the women's 200-meters, the women's distance medley relay, and the women's 4x400 meter relay.
During finals on Friday,
Netanya Linares won the pentathlon with 3645 points that included first places in the 60-meter hurdles and long jump.
Thomas Stamper (36.56) and
Grant Witherspoon (36.56) were sixth and seventh respectively in the 300 meters.
Camille Terracina (19:27.96) was third in the 5,000 meters and
Carolyne Shealy (20:00.92) was fifth.
Carson Archie was second in the men's 5,000 meters at 15:48.84, while
James Moon was fifth at 16:47.13. In the relays, the both the men and women were fourth in the 4x800 meters. In the men's distance medley relay, Wofford took the third and fourth spots, while winning the women's event in 12:54.65.
In Friday preliminaries,
Kerrington Johnson (8.63),
Netanya Linares (8.85) and
Marga Van Der Linde (9.37) qualified for the Saturday finals of the 60-meter hurdles for the women and
Grant Witherspoon (8.58) advanced for the men. In the 60-meters,
Madeline McNinch (7.75) and
Georgia McDevitt (7.84) advanced to the finals, while
Rylee Jorgensen for the women and
Nevius Fisher for the men both missed qualifying by one spot.
During the field events on both days,
Christopher Sheppard was fourth in the triple jump at 13.69, with
William Brimm finishing sixth. In the women's triple jump,
Rylee Jorgensen was fourth at 10.99 meters.
Jenna Reid was fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 14.92 meters.
Tanner Henry was second in the high jump at 2.00 meters and
Nevius Fisher was third in the long jump at 6.75 meters.
Ellie Sawicki threw the shot 11.83 meters for fourth place. In the women's long jump,
Madeline McNinch was second (5.54 meters) and
Rylee Jorgensen was third (5.51 meters).
To conclude the men's heptathlon on Saturday,
Zion Bennett was third with 4,079 points which included first places in the 60-meters and 60-meter hurdles.
Sebastian LaTorre was fourth at 3,988 points.
In the Saturday running events,
Mary Claire Ridgeway was sixth in the mile at 5:24.91 and
Camille Terracina was eighth at 5:33.36. The men's 400-meters saw
Conor Murphy finish seventh (50.71) and
Robert Hilsman eighth (50.84). In the women's 400-meters,
Jasmine Jefferson was first (57.75),
Dahlia Cutler was third (58.78) and
Marga Van Der Linde was fourth (1:00.91).
Grant Witherspoon was sixth in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles at 8.64.
Kerrington Johnson took first place in the women's 60-meter hurdles in 8.70, with
Netanya Linares second (8.86) and
Marga Van Der Linde fourth (9.30). During the finals of the women's 60-meters,
Madeline McNinch was fourth (7.82),
Ella Tennant was fifth (7.88) and
Georgia McDevitt was seventh (7.96).
Brooke Sayre was seventh in the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:23.52.
Cameron Dalton set a new school record in the men's 200-meters with a time of 21.71 as he wont he event, while
Robert Hilsman was sixth at 22.30.
Madeline McNinch added a first-place finish in the women's 200-meters in 25.08, with
Georgia McDevitt third in 25.95. In the 3,000 meters,
Demir Degirmenci was ninth at 9:11.04 for the men and
Alexus Atkins was second for the women at 10:31.60, with
Ava Fowler fifth (10:46.04) as well. To wrap up the meet, the men took second place in the 4x400 meter relay. The women's 4x400 relay team of
Dahlia Cutler,
Georgia McDevitt,
Presley Worf and
Jasmine Jefferson added a win with a time of 3:57.40.
Over 35 schools (16 men's and 21 women's) took part in the meet, including Davidson, Gardner-Webb, James Madison, Kennesaw State, Radford, VCU and VMI.
Up next for the Terriers will be the Marshall Invitational on February 10 and 11 in Huntington, West Virginia. The SoCon Indoor Championships will be held on February 25 and 26.
