Baseball Downs High Point, 11-3, in Winston-Salem

Terriers deposit 11 hits, pair of homers in neutral-site win

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wofford baseball team rolled past the High Point Panthers Sunday afternoon at David F. Couch Ballpark, winning 11-3 behind a pair of long balls and a gem from starter Matthew Marchal. Wofford improves to 32-11 with the neautral-site result wile High Point drops to 13-30.
 
Terrier starter Matthew Marchal (9-1) turned in 6.2 solid innings of work to claim the win, his SoCon-leading ninth victory of the campaign. He allowed three runs on six hits with only one walk issued while punching out seven. Only two other Terriers toed the rubber, as Zac Cowan followed out of the bullpen. He delivered 1.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just a pair of hits. Lucas Mahlstedt closed out the final 0.2 innings, striking out one with no runs or hits allowed.
 
Gus Hughes (5-5) suffered the loss for the Panthers as the starter, pitching 3.0 innings with six runs allowed on five hits and a walk.
 
The Terrier offense exploded for 11 hits in the contest, led by Trey Yunger with three, all of which were doubles. He added an RBI. Dixon Black and Brice Martinez each turned in a pair of hits. Black added three runs knocked in, and Martinez contributed one. Black also clubbed one of two Wofford home runs in the contest. Andrew Mannelly hit the other, earning two RBI. Ryan Galanie also brought home a pair of runs with one hit.
 
Wofford took full advantage of High Point miscues, working three walks at the plate while issuing only one on the mound. The Terrier defense was clean on the day, committing no errors in comparison to the four Panther blunders.
 
Wofford opened the contest with authority, plating six runs in the bottom of the first. Dixon Black started things off with a two-run single to left, and Brice Martinez followed with an RBI single of his own. Gunnar Johnson added an RBI double to right center, preceding a two-run blast off the bat of Andrew Mannelly. The home run to right center gave Wofford a 6-0 advantage after an inning.
 
Thing settled down from there until the fifth, when Black delivered a solo shot to left field, extending the Terrier lead to 7-0.
 
High Point cracked onto the scoreboard in the seventh with three runs off a pair of long balls, cutting the score to 7-3.
 
The Terriers tacked on three more in the eighth. With Martinez on second, an errant throw on a pick-off attempt allowed him to race around and score. Later, Ryan Galanie came up with two on and deposited a two-run single. A Trey Yunger double would score Galanie, making the score 11-3.
 
The score would stay there, as the Terriers went on the claim an 11-3 victory over High Point.
 
Wofford returns to action for a road midweek battle at Tennessee on Tuesday. That game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start in Knoxville.
