KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Wofford baseball team was locked in an early scoreless battle with the No. 6/18 Tennessee Volunteers Tuesday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, but the Volunteers ultimately prevailed 13-3 in seven innings. Wofford drops to 32-12 while Tennessee improves to 31-14.

Terrier reliever
Zac Cowan (3-3) shouldered the loss after surrendering three runs (two earned) in 2.0 innings of work with three hits and three strikeouts.
Charlie Weber started, the first of six pitchers Wofford used. Weber tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and one walk with four punchouts.

Tennessee reliever AJ Russell (2-0) claimed the win after 2.1 innings with one run allowed on no hits and two walks.

The Terriers tallied four hits, coming off the bats of
Trey Yunger,
Dixon Black,
Cameron Gill and
Marshall Toole. Gill and Toole knocked in runs, and
Gunnar Johnson added an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Ryan Galanie reached twice with a pair of walks. Yunger, Black and Gill also each stole a base in the contest.

Pitching was on early for both teams, as each of the first two innings went by with no runs. But Tennessee broke the scoring drought in the bottom of the third with three runs. A triple plated two before an error brought another home, making the initial margin 3-0 in favor of the Volunteers.

Tennessee extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth with four runs, making the score 7-0.

Wofford got on the board with three runs in the top of the sixth. With two runners on,
Cameron Gill singled to right to score
Ryan Galanie for Wofford's first run.
Marshall Toole's bunt single plated
Dixon Black, and
Gunnar Johnson brought home Gill with a sacrifice fly. The Terriers cut into the Tennessee lead, 7-3.

But the Volunteers added to their lead with six runs in the sixth, stretching it 13-3.

The Terriers were unable to respond in the top of the seventh, falling 13-3 to Tennessee.

Wofford returns to SoCon play this weekend with a road series at UNCG. The three-game set against the Spartans begins Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
