SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today its selection for women's basketball player of the week for games played January 16-21 with Wofford's
Rachael Rose claiming the honor for a record seventh time this season. The selection is made by the league office.
Â
The recognition for Rose is her seventh of the campaign, breaking the single-season SoCon record of six previously held by Chattanooga's Alex Anderson in the 2007-08 season.
Â
"Rachael continues to play at a high level. Her triple-double Saturday was quite the accomplishment," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "It's fitting that she is recognized as the SoCon Player of the Week and sets the single-season record for this recognition after the first triple-double in Wofford women's basketball history. We are happy for her."
Â
In Wofford's lone game of the week, a 69-51 triumph at home over the rival Furman Paladins, Rose put forth a career day with 19 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists for a triple-double, the first in program history. It was the first by a SoCon women's basketball player in 10 years, last achieved by Georgia Southern's Anna Claire Knight in 2014. Rose's rebounds and assists are both new career highs. Those 16 boards are tied for fourth most in a single game in program history.
Â
A native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, Rose was 6-of-12 from the floor and 7-of-9 at the charity stripe. She added in a career-high two blocks with a pair of steals. The junior guard was instrumental in Wofford's 17-point run in the fourth quarter to help the Terriers pull away and ice the game late. In that five-minute run, Rose was responsible for eight points, two assists, two steals, six rebounds, a block and a charge drawn. She has pushed her program-record double-digit scoring streak to 36 consecutive games.
Â
At 2-1 in the SoCon, Wofford will remain home this weekend with a pair of match-ups against Mercer and Samford. The Terriers first battle the Bears at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday before facing the Bulldogs on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Both games will be aired on ESPN+ and will be played in the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
