Coach Garrity brings Clemson alum to Spartanburg from Jacksonville State

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College women's basketball head coach Jimmy Garrity has announced the addition of Desitny Thomas to his coaching staff. Thomas joins the Terriers as an assistant coach after prior stints at Tulane, Anderson, and Jacksonville State, including the last two years with the Gamecocks.

"We are thrilled to welcome Destiny Thomas to the Wofford Women's Basketball family," said Garrity. "Destiny has excelled at every stop in her career—from her playing days at Clemson to her coaching roles at Tulane, Anderson, and most recently Jacksonville State. During her interview, she had a chance to connect with our team, and the response was overwhelmingly positive—our players were genuinely excited when they heard she was joining us. Destiny is a perfect fit for our culture, and we feel like we hit a home run with this hire. We're excited for the future with her on board."

Thomas joined Jacksonville State in August of 2023 and has spent each of the last two seasons with the Gamecocks under the tutelage of coach Rick Pietri. This past season, Thomas helped coach Clara Gonzalez Planella to CUSA Sixth Player of the Year honors.

"I'm incredibly excited to be at Wofford College," said Thomas. "The culture, proven success, top-tier facilities, and, most importantly, the great people made this an easy decision. I'm grateful for this opportunity and look forward to learning, growing, and contributing under outstanding leadership."

No stranger to the Upstate, Thomas spent the 2022-23 season with Division II Anderson University. She helped guide the Trojans to an 18-13 campaign, including 10 league victories and an appearance in the South Atlantic Conference Championship Game. In her time in Anderson, she coordinated recruiting efforts, provided on-floor coaching and development, and assisted in opponent scouting reports for a successful Division II program. Furthermore, she played a hand in the development of Second-Team All-SAC performer Diamond McDowell and SAC All-Freshman Team selection Ashlyn Sheridan.

Prior to landing her first full-time coaching job, Thomas spent one year as a graduate assistant at Tulane University. She was on the staff in the 2021-22 season when the Green Wave secured 21 wins and advanced to the American Athletic Conference Quarterfinals before topping her future employer Jacksonville State in the first round of the WNIT.

Thomas played collegiately for Clemson's women's basketball team over four seasons. As a guard with the Tigers, she appeared in 119 games from 2017-21, helping Clemson reach the NCAA Tournament in the 2018-19 campaign with a WNIT appearance in the 2020-21 season. She was a multi-time ACC Honor Roll honoree.

Thomas worked youth basketball camps at her alma mater in 2018 and 2019 and volunteered at Pelham (Ga.) High School's summer basketball camps in 2018.

The Pelham, Georgia, native graduated from Clemson University in just three years, earning a bachelor's degree in sports communication in 2020 before adding a master's degree in athletic leadership from Clemson in August 2021. She added another master's degree in sport studies from Tulane in 2022.

Thomas marks her third stint in the Upstate as she joins a Wofford program fresh off a 17-12 overall record and 8-6 SoCon mark. Last season concluded in the SoCon semifinals, Wofford's fifth-straight appearance in the round, which is the longest active streak in the league.
