Women’s Golf Fifth as Kent Finishes Runner-Up in Pirate Collegiate Classic

Bella Kent ties program record at 5-under par

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Despite weather shortening East Carolina's Pirate Collegiate Classic to just 36 holes, the Wofford women's golf team adjusted with a strong showing of 592 to place fifth, led by sophomore Bella Kent tying as the event's runner-up. Kent's 139 paced the Terriers at the Greenville Country Club, a par-72, 5,991-yard course, over the span of two days.

The event was originally scheduled for 54 holes over two days, but inclement weather in the area suspended round two late on Monday and forced the cancelation of the third round. The event concluded on Tuesday with the resumption of the second round. Over the two rounds, Wofford posted scores of 298 and 294 to total 592, tying for the 10th-lowest 36-hole score in program history. The Terriers were 16-over par and secured their first top-five finish since placing second at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate last season in April.

High Point won the event by three strokes, posting a 2-under 574 to edge out tournament host East Carolina.

Sophomore Bella Kent led the way for the Terriers with a 5-under 139 to tie for second place. Her 5-under mark is tied for the best individual score in relation to par in program history with Sarah Hurt, who also notched a 5-under score in the Great Smokies Collegiate in 2008. Kent opened with a 1-under 71, but she shined in round two with a 4-under 68 over the span of two days. That second round is tied for the third-lowest single-round score in program history, and her 139 total is tied for the second-lowest 36-hole tally in program history. The sophomore utilized seven birdies for her historic second round. Kent has secured her second-career runner-up result, her fourth top five and fifth top 10.

Kent was neck-and-neck with Radford's Macy Johnson over the course of the final round as the duo were playing partners. Johnson edged Kent for the win by three strokes, posting a 136 with the aid of a 66 in the final round to secure low medalist honors.

Freshman Delaney Wade placed in a tie for 32nd in her first full tournament. At 7-over par, Wade carded rounds of 77 and 74 to total 151.

Lilli Horn and Regina Parra both tied for 40th in the event at a 152 mark. Horn posted a 76 in each round. Parra opened with a 74, but she finished with a 78 in the final round. Maggie Jackson rounds out the Terrier lineup in a tie for 48th. Jackson posted rounds of 78 and 76 to total 154.

Wofford will look to build on its momentum when it returns to action in October by hosting the Terrier Intercollegiate. The two-day event will be held at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg and run from Monday, October 21, to Tuesday, October 22.
