Men’s Soccer Holds Wake Forest to a 0-0 Draw

Box Score

Winston-Salem, N.C.- Behind a stout defensive effort, the Wofford men's soccer team drew Wake Forest 0-0 in Winston-Salem on Tuesday night at Spry Stadium. The Terrier defense stifled the top shot-taking team in the nation to zero goals for Wofford's fourth shutout of the year.

The match was slow out of the gate as the Terrier defense quickly settled in, playing aggressive early, attacking passing lines and putting pressure on Wake Forest ballhandlers. The first shot of the game was taken by Wofford Magnus Kjoller in the 27th minute, shaping a curving shot to the right post from inside the box that missed a hair wide right. The Demon Deacons would respond by taking three-straight shots in quick secession, but the Terrier defense led by Bryce Peacock and Paul Jones blocked all three shots.

In the 37th minute, Wofford's best opportunity arose when freshman midfielder Kalle Rahbek took an opportunistic shot from outside the box. The shot ricocheted off the top of the crossbar and out of the goal. A lucky Wake Forest bounce out of the goal to a waiting defender saved the Demon Deacons from going down one to nothing. The Terrier defense would then withstand another late attack by Wake Forest to end the half. The Demon Deacons would take three shots in final five minutes of the half, but the Wofford defense would rise the challenge

The second half saw a renewed Wake Forest attack, taking 11 shots in the second half compared to Wofford's eight. The most dangerous opportunity came in the 88th minute, as a Wake Forest attacker broke free for a one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper Leo Ledin. The Swedish goaltender was up to the challenge however, parrying the shot away with his leg for the save. Although not tested often, only having three saves on the day, none were more crucial than that save which denied Wake Forest the potential game-winning goal. The game was quickly iced after that as Wofford cleared the ensuing corner kick that ended the game 0-0.

The Terriers were outshot in this match 18 to 12 with each goalie only having to save three shots. However, the Terrier defense led by Paul Jones and Bryce Peacock notably bothered the Demon Deacon attackers.

Wofford looks to continue the good form as the Terriers play ETSU at the friendly confines of Snyder Field on Saturday, October 12 at 7pm.
