Spartanburg, SC – Rounding out the inaugural weekend of Wofford Softball- sophomore right-handed pitcher
Margaret Axelson captured the team's first SoCon honor in winning Pitcher of the Week.
The sophomore earned both her first career D-I, and the Wofford program's first win, on Friday, February 9, 2024, when she spun a complete game shut out against the Robert Morris Colonials. Axelson scattered two hits and a walk across the seven innings and struck out five en route to the 3-0 victory. She also appeared in last
Thursday's season opener in relief- getting the final out of the fifth inning and only allowing a single hit.
"Margaret exemplifies hard work and determination. She transferred to us with a little bit of a chip on her shoulder and something to prove. She competes every day in the bullpen, so watching her success in the circle this weekend was a true joy. What an incredible honor for Margaret and what a start for Team One," Head Coach
Chelsea Butler had to say of Axelson's pitching performances over the weekend.
Of the four pitchers with unblemished ERAs in the SoCon, Axelson is the only one to start a game this season and leads the conference in batting average against- with opposing hitters only hitting .125 off her.
Wofford softball stays at home this coming weekend, February 16-18, as the team hosts the Wofford Invitational- featuring St. Francis (PA), Northern Kentucky and Rhode Island.
