CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford women's golf team played a pair of matches in the Oyster Shuck Match Play, hosted by The Citadel, splitting those matches with a win over Purdue-Fort Wayne and a loss to Samford. Round two yesterday at Charleston Municipal Golf Course was canceled due to rain, limiting the event and leaving Wofford in a tie for third place with Radford.
In Monday's opening round, Wofford squared off against the Mastodons of Purdue-Fort Wayne, winning 3-2.
Lindsey Hollis claimed her match 6 and 4, and
Lilli Horn won 2 up.
Maggie Jackson added a 2 and 1 victory.
Sofia Pedrero lost 4 down, and
Bella Kent lost 1 down.
Round one turned into a battle of endurance as all competitors has to overcome wet and rainy conditions, which ultimately scratched the originally-scheduled second round of play for Monday afternoon. With the tournament limited, round three remained in place for Tuesday.
That round saw the Terriers take on fellow SoCon foe Samford, which claimed the win. The 3 down defeat saw Pedrero get bested 8 and 7, Hollis 5 and 4 and Jackson 4 and 3. The final two matches remained tight but were halved after Samford earned its necessary three points. Horn fell 2 down, and Kent finished all square in her match.
After opening the spring slate in Charleston, the Terriers will head to Puerto Rico in the first week in March for The Puerto Rico Classic. The event is hosted by Ball State from March 5-7 in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
