Wofford Excels at SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championships

School-Record Seven Individual Titles Won

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 2024 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded on Sunday at VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility, with Wofford College winning seven individual championships. The Wofford women were second overall with 117 points, while the men were fifth with 62.5 points.

Wofford won a school-record seven individual titles. Southern Conference titles were won by Sherika Christie (pentathlon and triple jump), Jasmine Jefferson (200m and 400m), Ellie Sawicki (shot put), Nevius Fisher (60m), and Cameron Dalton (200m). The five titles for the women are the most in a single season, while the two for the men marks the first time with more than one title in a season.

Sherika Christie was named the Women's Most Outstanding Athlete. A Terrier has now received that honor three times in the last four years (Netanya Linares in 2021 and 2023).

The 117 points scored by the women were the third-most in school history and it is the third time in the last four years they have finished second in the SoCon. The fifth-place finish by the men is tied for the best in school history (2020 and 2021) with the 62.5 points the most ever, topping the 62 in 2018.

There were fourteen All-Southern Conference honors earned by the Terriers: Ellie Sawicki (shot put), Sherika Christie (pentathlon and triple jump), Nevius Fisher (long jump and 60m), Madeline McNinch (long jump, 60m and 200m), JaKayla Campbell (60m hurdles), Ella Tennant (60m), Jasmine Jefferson (200m and 400m), Cameron Dalton (200m), and the men's 4x400 meter relay.

Eight school records were set or tied during the championship, while Southern Conference meet records were set by Nevius Fisher (60m) and Jasmine Jefferson (400m). Terriers also earned a total of eleven All-Freshman Team honors during the weekend.

"It was a great weekend for us that saw some awesome performances by the men and the women," said head coach Johnny Bomar. "Individually Jasmine Jefferson turned in outstanding performances, while Nevius Fisher flew down the track as well. Sherika Christie is one of the biggest talents in the conference and is only a freshman. Overall we fought hard and had a great weekend."

Sunday began with the completion of the heptathlon, with Sebastian LaTorre finishing sixth with 4,288 points. He was first in the pole vault, clearing a school-record 4.50 meters.

In the field events on Sunday, Sherika Christie added a second title as she went 12.38 meters in the triple jump to take first place. In the men's weight throw, Chase Edwards threw 13.77 meters to take eighth place. Jake Ross added a sixth-place finish in the high jump at 1.90 meters.

Cameron Dalton was sixth in the event at 6.96. In the women's 60 meters, Ella Tennant was second at 7.57 and Madeline McNinch was third at 7.62 to earn spot on the podium. In the 400 meters, Zion Bennett was sixth (49.17) for the men. The women's race was dominated for the second straight year by Jasmine Jefferson. In the men's 200 meters, Cameron Dalton set a new school record with a time of 21.42 as he tied for first place with former Terrier Cagan Campbell, now a graduate student at Samford. Zion Bennett was sixth in the event at 22.51. For the women in the 200 meters, it was Wofford finishing first and second as Jasmine Jefferson won her second event of the day with a time of 24.13 that set a new school record. Madeline McNinch was second at 24.33, which as a person best.
