Baseball Returns to SoCon Play with Series at Mercer

After a quick stop at home for a midweek victory over Presbyterian, 24-3 in seven innings, the Terriers hit the road again for a three-game set at Mercer to return to SoCon action. Wofford is 25-10 on the season after that run-rule triumph over the Blue Hose, adn the Terriers are 6-3 in SoCon play, last taking two-of-three from UNCG two weekends ago. Mercer is 19-16 on the season and 3-6 in conference play after dropping two-of-three against VMI last weekend. But the Bears are fresh off a 13-6 upset of No. 8 Florida State on Tuesday. In a series dating back to 1905, Mercer holds a 29-20 all-time lead over Wofford. The Bears swept the regular season series in Spartanburg last season, but Wofford exacted revenge in the SoCon Tournament with a 16-14 win.

• The Terriers are outscoring their opponents 398-206 this season.
• All nine qualified Terriers are hitting over .300 with two boasting .400-plus clips.
• Wofford's 102 stolen bases are currently fourth in the nation.
• Marshall Toole's 30 steals lead the nation. He also boasts a 35-game on-base streak.
• Brice Martinez owns a 21-game hitting streak, tied for third longest in program history.
• Wofford's 15 runs in the fifth inning against Presbyterian are a new program record for runs in an inning.
• With 23 triples this season, the Terriers have set a new program record for triples in a season.
• Jack Renwick is Wofford's new career stolen base leader with 90, topping Brett Rodriguez and his 85 swipes.
• The Terriers have three of the top-five batting averages in the SoCon.
• Both Dixon Black and Jack Renwick have joined the 200 career hits club this season.
• Camden Wicker (2.72) and Zac Cowan (3.67) have the best and fourth-best ERAs, respectively, in the conference.
• With 102 steals this season, Wofford has now stolen 100 or more bases in 11-straight full seasons dating back to 2013, the longest active streak in Division I.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
Mercer is led at the plate by Jackson Cherry, who owns the seventh-best slugging percentage (.673) and fourth-most homers (11) in the SoCon. Parker Lester adds 12 doubles, tied for most in the league. Lester posts the best batting average on the team with a .331 mark, and Ty Dalley has knocked in the most runs with 37 RBI. Colton Cosper leads the way on the bump with an ERA of 3.75, fifth in the SoCon, over 57.2 innings of work. Jess Ackerman has struck out the most with 45, and Bryant Olson headlines the bullpen with seven saves. Mercer posts the best ERA in the conference with a 5.15 mark. The Bears also own the best fielding percentage at .981. But Mercer is only sixth in batting average (.281) and seventh in hits (323) and runs (238).

TRIPLE THREAT
The Terriers have been hitting triples with ease this season, posting 23 three-baggers to top the nation. Those 23 triples are now a program record for a season, topping the previous mark of 22 set twice prior in 1985 and 2016. Individually, four Terriers have at least three triples. Marshall Toole touts the most with six, most in the SoCon and second in the country. Dixon Black adds four himself, third in the league and 14th in the nation. Brice Martinez and David Wiley each have three triples. Wofford's individual single-season record for triples is seven, set by Mac Doyle in 2011. Toole is one shy of matching that record.

GOING ON THE OFFENSIVE
The Wofford offense has been almost unstoppable so far in 2024, totaling 398 runs through 35 games of the season, most in the nation. At an average of 11.4 per game, the Terriers lead the country in scoring per game. This is aided by the country's best on-base percentage (.464) and batting average (.351) and fifth-most hits (426). With 23 triples, the Terriers also top the nation and have set a new single-season program record. Wofford has scored double-digit runs in 20 games so far this season and outscored its opponents 398-206. The Terriers have recorded 20 or more runs four times, including twice scoring 29 runs, a new single-game program record. Three of Wofford's 20-plus scoring outings totaled 27 or more runs, making the Terriers one of only three teams in the nation to do so at least twice (Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Texas Tech). The Red Raiders have done so twice with the Lions matching Wofford at three times, but two of those instances were against Division II opposition. Therefore, Wofford is the only program in the nation to tally 27 or more runs against Division I opposition three times this season. Wofford has recorded double-digit hits 22 times.  It has been a balanced attack, as all nine qualified Terrier hitters are batting over .300 with two boasting averages over .400.

THE JACK ATTACK
Nobody has embodied the Wofford small ball philosophy quite like Jack Renwick. His 28 sacrifice bunts last season topped the nation by a mile, 15 more than the next-closest players. A senior, he is Wofford's career leader in sacrifice hits with 50 and counting. The previous mark was 29, originally set by Alex Lee (2008-11). Renwick's career total is good enough to rank in a tie for third all-time in Southern Conference history (Samford's Brad Moss). Renwick is three shy of the leader, College of Charleston's Brett Gardner with 53. Only Mercer's Jackson Ware (51) stands between Renwick and Gardner. Renwick is the nation's current active career leader in sacrifices with his 50 topping the 34 of Bradley's Ryan Vogel. His 28 sacrifices last season are a new single-season program record, topping the prior mark set in 2013 by Alex Paradowski. With 90 career stolen bases, Renwick is now the Wofford career record holder, topping the prior mark of 85 set by Brett Rodriguez (2017-20). Those 90 swipes are third most among active players in Division I baseball. Renwick is on the verge of another record, as he has scored a total of 177 runs in his career. The current Wofford record is 180 runs, set by Lawson Hill (2018-22). Renwick needs just three more runs to tie his former teammate and four to pass him. On top of it all, this season Renwick is batting .320 with 38 runs scored and 34 RBI alongside an on-base mark of .397 and slugging percentage of .469. Renwick owns 41 hits with a pair of homers. He is a perfect 11-of-11 on stolen base attempts.

ON-BASE MACHINES
With a potent offense, the Terriers have made themselves at home on the basepaths. Even more impressive is the consistency that many Wofford hitters have shown in regards to reaching base. Five Terriers currently boast on-base streaks of at least 15 games, led by Marshall Toole. The junior has reached base safely in all 35 games this season. Brice Martinez has been almost as consistent, currently owning an on-base streak of 27 games. He has reached safely in every game but one this year. This comes with a current 21-game hitting streak, and overall Martinez has a hit in each game but two. That 21-game hit streak is tied for the third longest in program history, and he is two away from the second-longest streak, 23 by Lawson Hill in 2022. Daniel Jackson adds in a 24-game on-base streak. Dixon Black and Andrew Mannelly are almost step-for-step with each other as Black owns a 20-game streak with Mannelly at 19 games. Though no longer their current marks, Tyler Bak once posted a 17-game on-base streak this season with David Wiley adding in a 10-gamer of his own.

ON DECK
The Terriers remain away with a contest at UNC Asheville on Tuesday, April 23, at 5:00 p.m. Wofford then returns home for a weekend conference series against Western Carolina.
