Baseball Returns Home to Host Western Carolina

Wofford returns home to Russell C. King Field after a little over a week away to host Western Carolina in a SoCon series. The Terriers are 27-11 (7-4 SoCon) after splitting two games at Mercer over the weekend (the third game was rained out) before downing UNC Asheville 5-3 in midweek play. The Catamounts are 21-17 (6-6 SoCon) after dropping two-of-three to Samford before falling 12-4 at No. 3 Tennessee in midweek action. The all-time series dates back to 1950 and features 108 total meetings with WCU holding a 76-21-1 lead. The Terriers won two-of-three in Cullowhee last season, including a 17-6 run-rule win the Sunday rubber match to take the series. This is the first series in Spartanburg between the foes since the infamous 2-2 tie on May 15, 2022.

QUICK HITS
• Wofford tops the country in OBP (.457), scoring (11.1) and triples (24).
• The Terriers are outscoring their opponents 420-220 this season.
• All nine qualified Terriers are hitting over .300 with Brice Martinez (.406) hitting over .400.
• Wofford's 113 stolen bases are currently fourth in the nation.
• Marshall Toole's 34 steals lead the nation, and he is five shy of Wofford's single-season record. He also boasts a 38-game on-base streak.
• With 24 triples this season, the Terriers have set a new program record for triples in a season. Marshall Toole's seven three-baggers are tied for most by a player in a season in program history.
• Jack Renwick is Wofford's new career stolen base leader with 90, topping Brett Rodriguez and his 85 swipes.
• The Terriers have three of the top-five batting averages in the SoCon.
• Zac Cowan is the reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Week.
• Camden Wicker (3.19) and Zac Cowan (3.29) have the second- and third-best ERAs, respectively, in the conference.
• With 113 steals this season, Wofford has now stolen 100 or more bases in 11-straight full seasons dating back to 2013, the longest active streak in Division I.

COWAN THE K MAN
Sophomore Zac Cowan has been a key piece of the Wofford rotation, proving every bit deserving of the Preseason All-SoCon Team selection he received after an All-Freshman Team nod as a rookie. The right-hander has been the staff's K man, tallying 79 punchouts for first in the SoCon and 14th in the nation. He tossed 13 strikeouts against Lafayette, a career high at the time. But he outdid himself at Mercer on April 19 with 14 punchouts in 9.0 innings of work. Those 14 punchouts are the fifth most in a game in program history and his new career high, earning him SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors. He boasts three total double-digit strikeout efforts. With a strikeouts per nine innings rate of 11.29, he tops the league. Cowan is 5-1 over his 10 starts thus far with those five wins fourth in the conference. Cowan has tossed 63.0 total innings with a 3.29 ERA, allowing only 27 runs (23 earned) on 61 hits. Of note, he has issued 18 walks to his 79 strikeouts, and he is holding opponents to a .251 average against. Cowan's 4.39 strikeout-to-walk ratio checks in at fourth in the conference. With 7.0 shutout innings in Wofford's run-rule win at VMI on March 29, he boasts an unofficial complete game shutout. Alongside his pitcher of the week honor on April 22, Cowan was dubbed SoCon Pitcher of the Month for March.

TRIPLE THREAT
The Terriers have been hitting triples with ease this season, posting 24 three-baggers to top the nation, three ahead of the next-closest squad (Northern Kentucky, 21). Those 24 triples are now a program record for a season, topping the previous mark of 22 set twice prior in 1985 and 2016. Individually, four Terriers have at least three triples. Marshall Toole touts the most with seven, most in the SoCon and second in the country. Dixon Black adds four himself, third in the league and 19th in the nation. Brice Martinez and David Wiley each have three triples. Toole has tied Wofford's individual single-season record for triples, matching Mac Doyle's seven from 2011.

ON-BASE MACHINES
With a potent offense, the Terriers have made themselves at home on the basepaths. Even more impressive is the consistency that many Wofford hitters have shown in regards to reaching base. Three Terriers currently boast on-base streaks of at least 15 games, led by Marshall Toole. The junior has reached base safely in all 38 games this season. Daniel Jackson adds in a 27-game on-base streak. Dixon Black is not far off, owning a 23-game streak. Though no longer their current marks, Tyler Bak once posted a 17-game on-base streak this season with David Wiley adding in a 10-gamer of his own. Andrew Mannelly had a 19-gamer that recently ended. Brice Martinez had been riding a 29-game on-base streak with a 23-game hit streak until both ended at UNC Asheville on April 23. But that hit streak ties for the longest in the program's Division I era (Lawson Hill, 2022) and the second longest overall in program history. Toole is one of just five players in the nation to have reached base in all 38 games this season, joining Riley Johnson (ECU), Drew Holderbach (App State), William Parker (Army) and Carmine Petosa (Bryant). Toole's mark is also the second longest in program history dating back to 1999 (records incomplete prior), currently three shy of the top mark of 41 set by Ryan Galanie between the 2022-23 seasons.

TOD DOGS
Wofford ranks among the conference and national leaders in many statistical categories. The Terriers lead the SoCon in batting average (.344), hits (456), hits allowed per nine innings (9.33), on-base percentage (.457), runs (420), sacrifice bunts (35), scoring (11.1), slugging percentage (.548), strikeouts per nine innings (9.0), triples (24) and WHIP (1.44). Wofford is second in walks (229), ERA (5.49), hits-by-pitch (67), stolen bases (113), stolen bases per game (2.97) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.46). Wofford's stolen bases are fourth nationally, and the bunts are ninth. Owning one of the best offenses in the nation, the Terriers lead the country in on-base percentage, scoring and triples while ranking third in both batting average and total runs. Wofford's slugging percentage is 15th in the country, and its 25 sac-flies are 16th. Wofford's total hits are seventh most in the country.

SETTING THE TABLE
Marshall Toole has thrived has the Terrier lead-off hitter all season, but he is not the only one to thrive when leading off. With an overall batting average of .393 and on-base mark of .505, Toole is doing his job quite well. But when specifically leading off an inning, Toole is even better at setting the table for his fellow hitters. The junior succeeds 43.1 percent (28-for-65) of the time as a lead-off hitter at getting on base. Six other Terriers are reaching at least 40 percent of the time as lead-off hitters with at least 10 lead-off opportunities this season: Tyler Bak (42.3), Tyler Hare (43.9), Gunnar Johnson (41.7), Andrew Mannelly (52.2), Brice Martinez (55.6) and David Wiley (47.1). In all, Wofford hitters reach base 42.0 percent of the time to lead-off an inning, succeeding 136 times in 324 tries.

ON DECK
The Terriers will play five-straight games of non-conference action, all against the Big South. Wofford hosts Winthrop on Wednesday, May 1, in midweek play before a split series against Gardner-Webb the following weekend. First pitch against the Eagles is set for 5:30 p.m.
