Spartanburg, SC – Five members of the Wofford softball team were recognized for their many accomplishments during the regular season with Head Coach
Chelsea Butler bringing home Coach of the Year honors,
Margaret Axelson earning a spot on the First Team and
Abby Greenwood,
Kaytlin Greenwood, and
Megan Towery each being named as part of the All-Freshman Team.
Hired in May of 2022, Butler's Coach of the Year Honor comes as the culmination of her efforts building a team from scratch and took the diamond this season with 11 true freshmen, 6 redshirt freshmen, 1 sophomore, 3 juniors, and a senior.
Once in the season, she guided the team to an 11-10 SoCon record (tied for fourth in the standings), a 22-22 overall record and series wins over Chattanooga and UNCG (both of whom will be the top two seeds in the upcoming conference tournament and have represented the conference in the NCAA tournament from 2018 onward). Wofford was the only team in the conference this season to take the series from Chattanooga and UNCG and the first team to do so in the same season since the 2017 Mercer Bears.
Axelson meanwhile joined the Terriers after spending last season with D-III Birmingham Southern and made a seamless jump to the D-I ranks – leading the conference in both ERA (2.14) and shutouts spun (3). The first of her three shutouts came on February 9, against Robert Morris in a 3-0 victory that represented the program's first victory.
The sophomore also holds the longest outing by a Terrier this season, going 12 innings in a victory over Furman on April 20, and tied for the team high in single game strikeouts with eight against Western Carolina on April 13. In that same game against Western Carolina, she recorded nine assists, which made her responsible for 17 of the 30 outs recorded in the contest. Her nine assists in that game put her tied for third in nation in single game assists and is only one of three pitchers nationally to record eight or more assists this season in one game.
Axelson's pitching counterpart,
Abby Greenwood, rode a 9-14 record with 2.74 ERA over 30 appearances (18 starts and 11 complete games), a shutout, a save, 70 strikeouts to only 24 walks and 133 innings pitched to her selection to the SoCon All-Freshman team. Some of Greenwood's season highlights include taking the circle as Wofford's first ever starting pitcher on February 8, against Eastern Kentucky, throwing Wofford's first ever pitch, recording the first strikeout, spinning an eight-inning complete game against ETSU on April 27, and earning both wins over UNCG on May 3.
Meanwhile,
Kaytlin Greenwood started all 44 games to date for the Terriers at shortstop and co-lead the team in homeruns (two) while also tallying a triple, three doubles, twenty-three hits, eighteen runs scored and seventeen walks. In addition, she is one of three Terriers this season to compile a on-base streak over ten games, safely reaching base in 12 straight contests from March 2 to March 24.
A mainstay in Wofford's outfield rotation,
Megan Towery started 28 of the 32 games she played this season with a .240 average, 18 hits, a double, homerun, 14 RBIs and 3 outfield assists. Towery was instrumental in Wofford's win over Mercer on March 24, going 2-for-5 at the plate with a homerun and 3 RBIs. She also played a pivotal role in the win over Samford on March 30, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
As a team, Wofford begins its inaugural run in the conference tournament tomorrow, May 8, at 10 AM as the fifth seed taking on eighth seeded ETSU in a single elimination game. The Terriers took two of three from the Buccaneers earlier this season in Johnson City, Tennessee. Should Wofford win and advance to the double elimination portion of the bracket, the team will meet the fourth seed Mercer Bears at 4 PM that same day. Mercer won the season series with Wofford in Macon, Georgia, on opening weekend of conference play on March 23-24.
All games will be streamed on ESPN+. All games will take place in Greensboro, North Carolina, and will be played at UNCG Softball Stadium.
