Wofford Baseball Hosts ETSU for Final Three Home Games of 2024

Wofford returns home for its final three games at Russell C. King Field this season as the Terriers host ETSU for three games. Wofford is 31-15 (8-6 SoCon) entering the weekend after dispatching Presbyterian 19-2 in seven innings on the road. ETSU is 31-15 (12-6 SoCon) after defeating UNC Asheville in midweek action for the Buccaneers' final home game. The series between the two foes dates back to 1957 and is almost even with the Terriers holding a slight 32-31 edge. Last season, Wofford took two-of-three in Johnson City, only dropping the final contest of the weekend. Game three of this weekend's series will serve as Senior Day for the Terriers, with Wofford honoring its 11 seniors prior to the 1:00 p.m. first pitch.

• Marshall Toole's 36 steals are third in the nation, and he is three shy of Wofford's single-season record.
• With 28 triples this season, the Terriers have set a new program record for triples in a season. Marshall Toole's nine three-baggers are a new program record for a season.
• Jack Renwick has broken Wofford's career program records for stolen bases (91) and runs scored (183).
• The Terriers have four of the top-12 batting averages in the SoCon with Brice Martinez topping the league.
• Brice Martinez collected his 200th career hit at Presbyterian, becoming the 15th Terrier to join the exclusive club.

SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS
ETSU owns the second-best batting average in the conference at .320, which is ninth in the nation. It ranks behind Wofford's .340 mark. The Bucs are also second in the league with 105 doubles, a .423 on-base percentage and a 1.48 WHIP. ETSU's 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings rate is the top of the conference. The Bucs are led at the plate by Nick Iannantone and Cameron Sisneros. Iannantone tops ETSU in batting average (.386) and on-base percentage (.505) while Sisneros is the power threat with 17 home runs. He adds in 67 RBI and a .737 slugging mark. On the mound, Michael Harpster tops the team with a 1.24 WHIP and eight wins, and his 5.13 ERA matches that of Carter Fink for the team lead. Owen Kovacs owns six saves as the team's closer.

SENIOR DAY
The Sunday finale, set for 1:00 p.m., will be Senior Day for the Terriers. Wofford will honor its 11 seniors prior to first pitch. The 2024 senior class includes: Dixon Black, Andrew Calhoun, Mike Eggert, Gunnar Johnson, Dom Marcoccio, Brice Martinez, Jack Renwick, Devon Sharts, Sam Stratton, Aaron Thomas and Holden Wilder.

GOING ON THE OFFENSIVE
The Wofford offense has been almost unstoppable so far in 2024, totaling 481 runs through 46 games of the season. At an average of 10.5 per game, the Terriers are second in the country in scoring per game. This is aided by the country's second-best on-base percentage (.450) and batting average (.340) and fourth-most hits (541). With 28 triples, the Terriers also top the nation and have set a new single-season program record. Wofford has scored double-digit runs in 22 games so far this season and outscored its opponents 481-259. The Terriers have recorded 20 or more runs four times, including twice scoring 29 runs, a new single-game program record. Three of Wofford's 20-plus scoring outings totaled 27 or more runs, making the Terriers one of only four teams in the nation to do so at least twice (Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Texas Tech and FDU). The Red Raiders and Knights have done so twice with the Lions matching Wofford at three times, but two of those instances were against Division II opposition. Therefore, Wofford is the only program in the nation to tally 27 or more runs against Division I opposition three times this season. Wofford has recorded double-digit hits 25 times.  It has been a balanced attack, as seven of the eight qualified Terrier hitters are batting over .300.

SETTING THE TABLE
Marshall Toole has thrived has the Terrier lead-off hitter all season, but he is not the only one to thrive when leading off. With an overall batting average of .380 and on-base mark of .476, Toole is doing his job quite well. But when specifically leading off an inning, Toole is even better at setting the table for his fellow hitters. The junior succeeds 41.8 percent (33-for-79) of the time as a lead-off hitter at getting on base. Nine other Terriers are reaching at least 40 percent of the time as lead-off hitters with at least 10 lead-off opportunities this season: Tyler Bak (42.9), Dixon Black (42.1), Adam Haber (46.2), Tyler Hare (42.6), Gunnar Johnson (41.7), Andrew Mannelly (51.9), Lucas Manning (66.7), Brice Martinez (60.6) and David Wiley (50.0). In all, Wofford hitters reach base 44.2 percent of the time to lead-off an inning, succeeding 172 times in 389 tries.

THE BRICE IS RIGHT
Fifth-year second baseman Brice Martinez is featuring yet again as a key contributor in 2024, living up to the Preseason All-SoCon Team selection he garnered. With 73 hits and a .390 average, Martinez adds in 48 RBI with 52 runs scored and 20 walks drawn. He has also swiped 14 bases. His batting average is best in the conference and 35th nationally. His 73 hits lead the league while sitting 23rd in the country. His runs scored rank seventh in the SoCon. Martinez is about as consistent as they come, owning a hit in 41 of the 46 games this season and reaching base safely in every game but three. He had a 23-game hit streak from March15 to April 20, which is tied for the second longest in program history (Lawson Hill, 2022) and the longest in the program's Division I era. With a first-inning single at Presbyterian on May 7, Martinez recorded his 200th career hit and became the 15th Terrier all-time to reach the prestigious marker.

30 ROCKS
With Wofford claiming its 30th win of the season on Sunday, May 5, at Gardner-Webb, the Terriers secured a 30-win season for the sixth-straight full season (COVID-shortened 2020 campaign excluded). J.J. Edwards, already the winningest first-year head coach in program history, is now the first skipper in program history to notch 30 or more victories in his first year at the helm. Wofford's streak of now six years in a row with 30-plus wins is the second-longest active run by a SoCon school behind only Mercer, who has a streak of eight seasons in a row since joining the league in 2015. But the Bears currently sit at 24 wins on the season with their streak currently in jeopardy.

THE D.J. IS JAMMING
Freshman catcher Daniel Jackson has not skipped a beat in his transition from high school ball to the college game. Jackson has quickly become the club's starting backstop and boasts a .360 batting average with a .446 on-base mark and .573 slugging clip. Jackson has scored 33 runs and driven in 47. With 54 total hits, he touts eight doubles and eight homers. His RBI rank 11th in the conference, and he touts the 12th-best batting average. A model of consistency, Jackson has recorded at least one hit in 34 of the 40 games he's played. He also touts an outstanding 35-game on-base streak, third longest by a Terrier since 1999. Furthermore, he has kept rocking into SoCon play with a .404 average in league games with an .809 slugging clip. He has driven in 18 runs during league play.
