Baseball Finishes Fall Practice

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team wrapped up the fall ball season and is set to change gears to focus on the upcoming 2026 season. The Terriers began with a matchup against Davidson on November 1, followed by a road contest against Longwood on November 8.  Wofford closed out fall with a three-game Black and Gold series intersquad scrimmage that took place on November 12-14.

"If you challenge them and you push them, they'll understand all the little things matter," head coach J.J. Edwards said about the preparation that goes into the fall. "Fall is the most coaching we do. If you do a really good job and don't take it for granted, everything is very detailed and you get the most out of it. It makes it easier in the spring. It all comes down to putting a big importance on the development and coaching in the fall."

The Terriers started their fall ball season playing a home contest against Davidson, followed by a matchup against Longwood on the road at the High Point Rockers Stadium.

"It's always nice to see how the young guys handle it because they've never been in that situation at all," Edwards said. "What you're looking for is what guys can slow down, what guys can handle it, and try to coach off of it.

"The number one thing you're looking for is to see if they'll get better when they start being comfortable," Edwards said. "You need to make them uncomfortable, so they can get comfortable. We saw improvement in the underclassman class from their language to understanding our system to even understanding baseball, all that got a lot better."

Wofford closed out fall with their annual Black and Gold scrimmage, where the coaches picked the players in a draft based off position to curate the teams. The Black team came out with an overall series win over the Gold team to conclude the fall.

USC Aiken transfer Blayne Newman was named the most valuable pitcher by the Wofford coaching staff for his performance in the series. In six innings, Newman put up eight strikeouts and did not allow a run in two appearances.

"He's done a great job integrating into our system and understanding how we play and what he needs to work on," Edwards said. "Blayne was very successful at the Division II level, and he's done a really good job at adapting, learning and being super successful on the fly since coming here."

Sophomore infielder Cade Collins was awarded most valuable player honors in the series. Collins went five for 11 while driving in three runs. Collins also doubled three times and tripled once during the Black and Gold scrimmage.

"He has always been a good Wofford player," Edwards said. "Cade's coming off a really good summer in the Northwoods League, and you can tell that he's improved a lot. He's gotten calmer, he is slowing the game down and everything doesn't have to go right for him to be successful."

The Terriers will be back in action starting in February 2026. Follow the action on Facebook, Instagram and X at @WoffordBaseball for live updates, press releases and more.
